Legend
Fergus became king of Ulster after his predecessor, Eochaid was killed in the Battle of Leitir Ruad. he desires Eochaid's daughter Ness, but she will only marry him if he allowed her seven-year-old son Conchobar to be king for a year, so his sons would be the sons of a king. The nobles of Ulster reassure him that the boy will be king in name only, so Fergus agreed, but Conchobar, with his mother's help, ruled so wisely that the nobles make him king permanently in Fergus's place. Fergus didn't mind he was carefree and was happier with his bride despite her betrayal. Fergus remained Conchobar's loyal retainer, and becomes the foster father of Conchobar's eldest son Cormac and nephew Cúcuhulain.

When Conchobar's intended bride, Deirdre, eloped with the young warrior Naoise and his two brothers, Conchubar tracked down to an island off Scotland. Conchobar announces he has forgiven them and sends Fergus, Cormac, and Fergus' son Fíachu, to offer them safe conduct home. Naoise and his brothers swear they will eat no food until they dine with Conchobar at his pallace Emain Macha. Conchobar, however, orders the Ulstermen to invite Fergus and Cormac to feasts, and as it is shameful to refuse hospitality they cannot refuse. Fergus is separated from his charges, and Fíachu is left to escort them to Emain alone. When they arrive, Fíachu, Naoise and his brothers were murdered by Conchobar. After hearing of this betrayal, Fergus, Cormac burned Emain Macha and defected to Connacht with three thousand followers, where they entered the service of king Ailill and queen Medb. Medb fell in love with Fergus and took him for her lover it is said if she couldn't have Fergus she need 30 men to satisfy her.

When Ailill and Medb raised a huge army and launched the Cattle Raid of Cooley to steal Ulster's divine stud bull, Donn Cúailnge, Fergus' knowledge of the terrain meant he was chosen to lead the way as chief Scout. He lead the army by a roundabout route, hoping to give the Ulstermen time to raise their own army, but they were disabled by a curse. He sent a message to Cúchulainn, who began his single-handed defence of the province.

The Connacht army separated, with Ailill leading one section, and Medb and Fergus leading the other. Ailill was suspicious, and sent his charioteer to spy on them. The charioteer found Fergus and Medb having sex, and unnoticed, stole Fergus' sword, Caladbolg which Ailill kept safe as proof, Fergus made himself a dummy sword of wood to save face. Cúchulainn held up the army's progress by fighting a series of champions in single combat. Fergus went to face him, but seeing that Fergus had no sword Cúchulainn agreed to yield, on the condition that Fergus would yield the next time they met.

Eventually the Ulstermen recovered from their curse, and the final battle began. Ailill gave Fergus back Caladbolg and he met Conchobar on the battlefield. He defeated Conchubar, but was prevented from killing him by Cormac. He redirects his rage into cutting off the tops of three hills with his sword. Cúchulainn, who had so far sat out the battle, recuperating from his wounds, entered the fray and challenged Fergus. Fergus honoured his promise and yielded, pulling his followers from the field. Medb's other allies, seeing him withdraw, paniced and begin to retreat. The Connacht army was routed, although they managed to escape with the bull. Fergus bitterly remarked, "It is the usual thing for a herd led by a mare (Medb) to be strayed and destroyed."

After the death of Conchubar the men of Ulster asked him to become their king again but he refused as he had sworn loyalty Medb's so he passed the crown onto Cormac the rightful heir. One day, after Fergus has been in exile for fourteen years, Ailill saw him in a lake having sex with Medb, and was overcome with jealousy. He told his blind brother, Lugaid that deer were playing in the water, and persuaded him to throw a spear at them. He did so, hitting Fergus in the heart. He climbed out of the water and threw the spear back, killing Ailill's deer-hound, before dying
