Its costs are expensive. 3-5 times the cost of regular DVD's considering its a very new format. It's an Optical Disc Storage media format. Its main uses are high-definition video (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High-definition_video) and data storage. The name Blu-ray Disc is derived from the blue-violet laser used to read and write this type of disc. Basically Its similar to a DVD but with ton more storage and is in HD. Here is more info if you want. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bluray
hope that helped.

Yeah jsc pretty much already answered your question but....

Yeah Blu-Ray is just a new format of DVD...Crisp High quality video is what ya get with it...Not to mention the Blu-Ray players are expensive XD...especially now since HD-DVD basically dead.

But yea all it really is...is a New type of DVD player that plays these Blu-Ray discs in the highest HD quality there is.

Also only if you have a TV that can show 1080P then its not worth it at all. Most people cant tell the difference from 720P to 1080P. Most HD signals on tv are usually 720P or rarely 1080i. I have DVD player that upconverts regular dvd's to my HD tv and it looks great and happy with it. There us no reason for me to get anything more. I mean DVD's are really not all that old.

Ya Jsc is right. But BluRay is not worth it. The cost doesnt equal the revenue.
