adobe premier is the best video software handsdown, we used it in college for our media and film course and its the tits, but make sure you have a good graphics card otherwise making good videos will be a pain in the back side, plus most laptops its either very hard or impossible to uprgrade ya graphics card so make sure ya get a good one!
Cant go wrong with zonealarm firewall and avast anti virus, both free. All you need then is ccleaner and adaware and your set to go!

I assume this is a Windows computer, so let's base programs around that.
First, t3ku has posted a great list of software here:
http://www.animea.net/forums/f20/tech-links-thread-16899/
Check out that list for some nice free (natively) software.
So, you want to become a video producer? How detailed are you willing to go? The best video editing program for Windows is Adobe Premiere Pro. Hands down it is the most powerful and feature-rich video editing program. It has tight integration into the other Adobe Production products such as Encore DVD, Audition (Soundbooth), After Effects, and Photoshop. However, it is very expensive, but is truly the best choice if you are serious about production. I use this along with the programs listed above in my own productions.
Bringing it down a few knotches you have Sony Vegas Video. This is a relatively inexpensive program that does some prety nice video editing. It comes in three different price ranges depending on how many features you need. It also comes with DVD Architect so you can make professional DVDs for your movies. Vegas Video doesn't have the same steep learning curve as Premier Pro does, but then again it isn't really made for the same audience.
If you want to go the natively freeware route, CodecGuide.com has made a nice little pack containing Avidemux (a free video editor), DVDStyler (for building the DVD) and ImgBurn (for burning the DVD).
http://www.codecguide.com/video_conversion_pack.htm
It's all up to you!
i have a site i download programs from for free so moneys not a problem*Sigh....* Piracy is illegal, mate. If you are capable of purchasing a product, you should. If not, that's another story, but things like Vegas Video and Avidemux are nominal/free to begin with. Use your own judgment.
Edit: Oh, and for security, take a look at my security review:

Not technically....we get around most of those rules because the anime that we have has yet to be licensed in America. International copyright and licensing rules enter a gray legal area, but that's how all of the anime sites (ourselves included) are able to run.

well that may be true but also included sites like this can run even if it illegal the hacking worlds got tons of sites up and have people from sony and nintendo on it but there sttill running
they cant really kick you offline
but some of the anime also has english audio
so i bet it has a american copyright but still it doesnt really matter
oh well

LOL... I've got a whole list of em'.
I've got a whole binder of CDS and DVDS =P - for installation after reformats, or after remounting an old HD image (basically re-installing).
Security-wise, a router, some security suite, / Comodo, PC Tools, Zonelabs Firewall, etc, and avast!, zonelabs, bitdefender, or all those good ones out there will do you good.
I currently have, PC Tools, avast! and a router =P. PC Tools gets annoying. Loved Comodo, but wanted to try new ones.
Software - I've got WinRar, WinAMP, CCleaner, Mozilla Firefox, WLM Installer, MediaCoder, DVD Decrypter, avast!, Ausus Disk Defrag. (which I'm about to try out after reformat), Search & Destroy, Windows XP SP2 Installer (so that I can have a majourity of this stuff, and other drivers installed before actually surfing the NEt), Comodo, uTorrent, Paint.NET, The Gimp - AND a SHITLOAD of drivers =P.
Some like my GFX drivers, I always have a new one handy on a USB stick, while the others I have on a CD/DVD. Most of the drivers (essential) however, will come with your laptop. (hopefully). The old chipset driver, or an old gfx card driver, soundcard drivers, ethernet drivers?, etc.
Some of them, I never get to use. But its always good to know that THEY ARE THERE.
I always try to keep my security lightweight and effective. I always think that an optimal is like avast! and windows firewall since windows firewall is embedded anyways. Though I don't think its yet effective enough for me, as I do a fair amount of surfing, gaming, and downloading.

you were looking for some video converters. i think magic video converter is about the fastest out there and pretty simple to use and has a decent amount of options.
http://www.magic-video-software.com/download.html
and here a torrent for it since i dont belive you should have to pay for something to just convert a video file to what you want it to be.
