Akatsuki (暁; Literally meaning "Dawn" or "Daybreak") is a criminal organization of S-class missing-nins (except Pain and Konan) and is the most wanted group in all of shinobi world. Their main goal is to collect all of the Jinchuuriki (http://www.animea.net/forums/f62/all-about-secrets-9-jinchuuriki-34255/)(Tailed-Beasts) for their plan on world domination.
Akatsuki at any given time is composed of no more than 10 primary members, all of whom are or were S-Class criminals of their respective villages. Members always work in teams of two with the exception of Zetsu, who functions as the organization's spy, and make use of their unique skills to the teams advantage. Team members at the very least have to have functional team work with their partner even if they don't like each other.
Akatsuki is widespread, spanning several countries with agents in various places. When one team finds a tailed-beast and has to begin the job of sealing the demon, they have hidden hideouts with many traps ready, to begin the sealing with the organization's apparent leader's astral projection for a three-day long jutsu.

Main Goal:

Although some members joined Akatsuki to further their own goals, all are united in the Akatsuki's ultimate goal of gaining world domination. The apparent leader, Pein (Pain), has created a three-step process to work their way towards this goal. First, they plan to obtain a large amount of money to support their organization. Second, they plan to set up a mercenary group loyal only to Akatsuki. To build their reputation, they plan to accept any mission below the usual cost and operate off of the excess funds earned in the first part of their plan. Because there haven't been any wars in some time, the established shinobi villages couldn't afford to charge such low prices, leading the smaller countries to hire Akatsuki over the more expensive shinobi villages. By using the tailed beasts, Akatsuki would start wars and then immediately quell them, solidifying their reputation and convincing every country to depend on them, thus cornering the market in shinobi labor. Without any business, the other shinobi villages would collapse due to a lack of funds. Finally, after Akatsuki is the only major force of shinobi in existence, they can easily conquer the other countries. Members do not automatically learn of the plan upon joining; Hidan did not find out about it until he had been a member for quite some time.
The Jinchuuriki (http://www.animea.net/forums/f62/all-about-secrets-9-jinchuuriki-34255/), nine gigantic demons of immense power, are the focus of much of Akatsuki's efforts and screentime within the series. Each member of Akatsuki is assigned to capture one of the nine beasts alive or, in most cases, the person that beast has been sealed into. Akatsuki has so far obtained seven of the nine: the first through the seventh tailed beasts.
However, this plan may just be a ruse as the Akatsuki's three most prominent members have separate goals in mind.

Madara's Goal:
(http://naruto.wikia.com/wiki/Madara_Uchiha)Madara plans on using Akatsuki to gain the tailed-beasts for himself and use their power to restore the strength of his Mangekyō Sharingan. Since the early years of Konoha, he has showed great interest in destroying Konoha.

Pein's Goal:
Pein later goes into further detail on the tailed beasts' role in his plans. The beasts would be used to create a deadly kinjutsu technique that could wipe out one of the five great nations in an instant, so if countries go to war and do not have ninja villages to fight for them, they would turn to Akatsuki and their weapon. Whichever side makes Pain use the technique first would wipe out the opposing country, which would scare them into never using their weapon again, and scare the other countries to never start a war or they would be wiped out too. Through the mutual fear, war would cease to exist and the world would know peace, until the people forget that fear and use the weapon again. Thus the cycle would repeat, creating small periods of peace in an endless chain of hatred.

Itachi's Goal:
After the Uchiha Massacre and leaving Konoha, Itachi, instead of using the tailed-beasts for his own self-interest, he continued to protect the village by joining Akatsuki and keeping an eye on them (especially Sasuke) from the outside. During his time in the group, Itachi would delay his own attempts to capture the Nine-Tailed Fox, leaked indirectly various information about the organization to Konoha, and attempted to kill Madara through Sasuke. Before his death, Itachi gave Naruto some of his "power", telling him to continue protecting Konoha and Sasuke, should the event occur that Sasuke would plan for their village's destruction. The "power" that Itachi gave to Naruto remains unknown.

WardrobeAkatsuki members have a similar way of dress, which could give them away if a village is alerted of their presence. Members wear long, dark cloaks with red clouds, a red interior, and a chin-high collar. All members, except Tobi (due to the fact that he's wearing gloves), wear nail polish of varying colors on their finger and toenails, and may wear a conical straw hat with small spike-like balls hanging down to cover their faces. The hats may be used to move around in the general population unnoticed, or for when the weather requires one. Most members tend to wear their village headband with a scar through the middle to show their defection.

The Akatsuki Ring

What seems to be most important however are their rings. In total there are ten rings given to each of the ten main members of Akatsuki. The rings apparently signify one's membership, since when Orochimaru defects, he takes his ring with him and as such wasn't replaced. The ring's exact purpose have not been revealed.

The various rings are:


Right thumb: 零 (rei, "zero"); currently worn by Pein,
Right index finger: 青 (sei, shō, "Blue, Green"); formerly worn by Deidara. Seiryu's color is teal,
Right middle finger: 白 (bya, "white"); currently worn by Konan. Byakko is presumed to be white, due to the ring's name,
Right ring finger: 朱 (shu, "vermilion," "scarlet"); formerly worn by Itachi Uchiha. Suzaku's color is red,
Right little finger: 亥 (gai, "Sign of the Boar"); currently worn by Zetzu,
Left little finger: 空 (kū, "sky," "void"); formerly worn by Orochimaru. Kuchin's color is light blue/gray,
Left ring finger: 南 (nan, "south"); currently worn by Kisame Hoshigaki. Nanju's color is yellow,
Left middle finger: 北 (hoku, "north"); formerly worn by Kakuzu. Hokuto's color is green,
Left index finger: 三 (san, "three"); formerly worn by Hidan. Santai's color is orange,
Left thumb: 玉 (gyoku, "jewel," "ball", also the king in shogi); currently worn by Tobi, formerly worn by Sasori. Gyokunyo's color is purple.

Eight of the ten kanji of the rings are taken from a Kuji-In (Nine Syllable Seals): a collection of nine hand postures used in meditation. These kuji-in have found their way into ninja folklore as a kind of magic spells. Pain's "rei" and Zetsu's "gai" are not from this kuji-in. However, the only unused kuji-in kanji, 玄 (gen, "mysterious"), bears a strong resemblance to Zetsu's "gai," suggesting an error. It would be a consistent error, however, since the "gai" kanji has been used in every instance the ring's kanji has been shown, both in the manga and the data books.


Team Hawk allies themselves with Akatsuki. They wear Akatsuki cloaks, but they seem to have hoods instead of high collars. None of them wears a headband, nail polishes, nor the rings, signifying that they're unofficial members.

Pain (ペイン, Pein) is the recognized leader of the Akatsuki and Amegakure, and is a major antagonist in the series. Referred to as "Leader" by all Akatsuki members except for Konan, who refers to him by his name, he directs the actions of the others and maintains authority over them although he takes orders from Tobi, who is actually Madara Uchiha, the benefactor of Akatsuki. In addition to acting as Akatsuki's leader, Pain was the leader of the winning faction in the Land of Rain's latest civil war.

Konan (小南) is the only female ninja in Akatsuki and the only member to call her partner, Pein, by his name.

Itachi Uchiha:

Itachi Uchiha (うちはイタチ, Uchiha Itachi) is Sasuke Uchiha's older brother, and a missing-nin from Konohagakure, and a prominent member of Akatsuki, partnered with Kisame Hoshigaki. He and Kisame were the first active Akatsuki members to appear.

Kisame Hoshigaki (干柿鬼鮫, Hoshigaki Kisame) is a missing-nin from Kirigakure and was partnered with Itachi Uchiha within the Akatsuki.

Madara Uchiha (うちはマダラ, Uchiha Madara), at the beginning posing as Tobi (トビ) in the Akatsuki, formerly appeared to be Zetsu's subordinate. Madara, as Tobi, became a full Akatsuki member after Sarori's death. He later wore Sasori's ring having recovered it after his death and took his place as Deidara's partner. After Deidara's death, he revealed his real name and that he had been the one giving Pein orders, making him the true leader of the Akatsuki. Only Pain, Konan, Zetsu, Itachi Uchiha, and Kisame Hoshigaki (who recognized him as the former Mizukage) know his true identity. He is one of five people who can use the Mangekyō Sharingan, the other four being his clanmates Izuna Uchiha, Itachi Uchiha, and Sasuke Uchiha, along with an unrelated Kakashi Hatake.

Zetsu (ゼツ) is a member of Akatsuki functioning as the organization's spy.

Kakuzu:

Kakuzu (角都, Kakuzu) is a fictional character from the manga series Naruto. The first kanji in Kakuzu's name (角) stands for kakugyō, a bishop in shogi.

Hidan (飛段) was the partner of Kakuzu despite their mutual dislike of each other, and was the second newest member of Akatsuki at the time of his expulsion. Kisame laughingly refers to Hidan and Kakuzu as the "zombie twins".

Sasori (サソリ, Sasori) also known as Sasori of the Red Sand (赤砂のサソリ, Akasuna no Sasori) was a member of Akatsuki prior to his death, and was partnered with Deidara, Orochimaru before that. He was the first Akatsuki member to die (at least on-screen) in the series. In the short amount of time that he was shown, Sasori was a relatively popular character. In the first poll he was in (the 6th overall poll) he placed 6th on the list. Sasori (蠍) means "scorpion".

Deidara (デイダラ) was the youngest member of Akatsuki and was partnered by Sasori and Tobi, consecutively, before his death.

Orochimaru:

Orochimaru (大蛇丸, Orochimaru) was one of the Konohagakure's three legendary ninja or Sannin, and is known as the "Giant Snake" (due to his affinity to snakes). He is the primary antagonist for most of Part 1. He was the student that everyone believed would become the Fourth Hokage, but his hunger for power led him to commit dark experiments and practice forbidden jutsu (it has also been explained that his descent into darkness may have been caused by the death of his parents). After the Third discovers what has been going on, Orochimaru leaves Konoha and forms Otogakure in the Land of Rice. Oto is actually a group of numerous hideouts and bases scattered throughout the Land of Rice and other countries. He is responsible for countless immoral experiments and collecting many ninja with unique abilities in his numerous hidden bases. He wishes more than anything to find the ultimate body and improve himself to the state of a god. He has attempted to possess Itachi Uchiha, Kimimaro, Sasuke Uchiha and Guren's body, but all of the attempts have failed for various reasons (Kimimaro had an illness that prevented Orochimaru from possessing him, Itachi's powers allowed him to reverse the jutsu and sever Orochimaru's left hand, Guren was too late to make it to his lair so he had to chose a new body to save his life, and Sasuke also managed to reverse the jutsu and possess Orochimaru's soul instead). Note that the events with Guren only occur in the anime.

Madara explained the truth about Itachi to Sasuke. He said that Itachi, ANBU member at the time, killed the Uchiha clan upon Konoha's orders. While explaining the history of the Uchiha and how the clan's actions led to their destruction, Madara reveals that Itachi could not bring himself to kill Sasuke with the rest of their family. He threatened to go public with the details of his mission if Konoha harmed Sasuke, and from that point forth pushed Sasuke to get stronger so that Itachi might die by his hand and avenge the Uchiha for what he did.

Suigetsu Hozuki (鬼灯水月, Hōzuki Suigetsu) was the first member to join Sasuke's Team Hawk, and his first step in his ultimate revenge against Itachi.

Karin:

Karin (香燐, Karin) is a former subordinate of Orochimaru who assisted him in his experimentations and was left in charge of one of his bases while he was away. She has red eyes, matching hair color, and an unusual hairstyle: her hair is short and unkempt on one side and long and combed on the other a sign of a fluctuating personality; Karin will at times appear tough and in control, and at other times will appear flirtatious. Karin's name means is made up for the kanji meaning "fragrance" or "perfume" and "sulfur". lt is also a homonym for the fruit "quince".

Jugo (重吾), was being held at Orochimaru's North Base, which is also where most of Orochimaru's secret research was conducted. Suigetsu can't stand Jugo and comments that one of the reasons he had to retrieve Zabuza Momochi's sword was because of him. Karin notes that Jugo is mentally unstable, a view confirmed by images of Jugo muttering to himself over who he will kill next, which he determines by gender sometimes. While discussing Sasuke's team with the other members of Akatsuki, Pein refers to Jugo as Jugo of Tenpin (天秤の重吾 Tenpin no Jugo literally "Jugo of the Scales"). Whether this refers to his family or clan name or his place of origin is unknown.

Just think how old he is =)! He fought against the 1st Hokage! now we do have the 5th...every hokage should change every generation(20 years)...actually XD...so we take..uhm...a 20 year old Madara, and just count.....1st hokage + 20 years, 2nd hokage + 20years, 3rd hokage + 20 years, 4th hokage + uhm..o_O 5 years? can´t be too long XD, 3rd again....12 years + the 5th 2~3 years and what do we get? =) a 20 year old Marada who is now about 100 years old lol...o_O ok lets just don´t count the first hokage XD so he´s about 80 o_o..kinda old huh?..

I mean, he could also destroy Konoha on his own, he don't need any of the Akatsuki.

well, to tell you the truth, wtf do we even know about sasuke now....last time we saw him he had problems with his eye, but he is also known to make rapid advancement in his technique and power....so until we see what happens with raikages team (you know he send some team to konoha to tell them they'll deal with uchiha) we can't be really sure how powerful he is...:exhausted2:

I don't understand what you are aiming at....you said it yourself when itachi GAVE his powers to sasuke.....well sasuke got a new power and it showed in a form of mangekyu...so...

and madara had to take his brothers eyes, because he was blind...I don't really know this but I only presume that if he had ok eyes and just killed his brother he would gain a new mangekyu....but then again it looks like there is more to this story sice madara is "immortal"
