I just checked out a website called birthornot.com I dont know if it is a hoax site or not I certainly hope it is because the very notion of this website has made me sick to my stomach. The site was apparently set up by Pete and Alisha Arnold, a couple from Minneapolis. Apparently, they have had trouble conceiving in the past (two miscarriages, according to their blogs on the site), but have managed to conceive again. They have taken the unusual step of setting up the site to allow the public to vote on just one issue regarding their pregnancy, and it’s not the child’s name, the public gets to decide whether they will continue the pregnancy, or abort.

The debate on whether or not abortion is acceptable is heated at best. But can anyone from either the pro-life or pro-choice camps actually say that it is acceptable to make such a big decision based simply on an internet poll? Aside from (in my own opinion) being flippant and callous, I also think that it is idiotic. With any medical procedure there are risks and pregnancy increases them ten fold. Since the website claims that the vote will remain open until just 2 days before the foetus has reached the legal age limit for abortion, it is fair to say that the procedure will be a dangerous one. Late term abortions are more risky, and it will be made even more so considering that Alisha, who according to her blog, has a number of health problems. Regardless of your views of the foetus as a living person does it not seem unbelievably stupid to willingly endanger your own life for a social experiment?

Overall the idea of letting the public make such a decision is sickening and it is for that reason I really hope the site is a hoax even if the outcome isn't the one I'd like to see.

Well, first I would like to ask: what is the outcome you would like to see? Before anyone say anything, its not something obvious. Its depends on each and every one. And I dont know Skullreken enough to know that.Thanks.-bow-

Like you said "that it is idiotic". Its almost as bad as throwing a dice and say " If is a 6, I will keep on going, but if its a 1, I will abort".
(Ok, both are really 'stupid'). Not talking about the abortion fact, but about letting others decide what to do with YOUR baby, its ridiculous!
It proves that they are not ready to be parents(or so I think). I can see that they probably lost their hope, and are really hurt about the two miscarriages, but making such decision, its 'over the board'(my opinion).
And is not only about the future baby! If, like you said Skullreken, the woman has health issues, she is risking her life! So, why, I ask WHY they both thought of something like that?If the abortion is decided, the chances of the woman dying are probably really big! And what good does that bring? The man will stay alone, losing both kid and wife.(No, not saying is his fault, just saying that I really dont get why he also agreed with that, knowing he could end up alone). And even if the wife come to live after all, who knows how her state will be?
As a nurse I can say I saw already lots of states, from people who cant do nothing(and when I say nothing, its NOTHING) to people who are totally fine. She could become a person that would never again walk on her life, eat or talk. She would lose everything she has right now! And so would him.
I am not putting a curse on them or anything, just saying what could happen. They are on a dangerous situation, and should not let outsiders decide things for them. Especially if in the future they will regret that (may happen, may not).
But, well, who are we to say what they should and should not do with their life?-.-

i just checkd their website and,,,talk about stupidity.
the whole idea is ridiculous, why would one decide something like that by an online poll. do they really call themselves human, and above that "parents"?

if you are asking me they are doing this whole thing just for one purpose, and that would be getting public attention
and that's all there is to it

yes! i just checked it too.
i think its more like wanting to be known to the public or have a name or something, and i do have my doubts if they were really gonna do what the votes decides.

it is Ridicules and idiotic to based these kinda of Designs on a poll, its more like saying ( i hate my self and i dont know if i what to kill my self or not, so you just decide that for me)!!!!
the ppl who are giving their votes, i dont think they care..coz the one who will be in danger are not the voters

abortion is not the solution to anything.. have mercy to the poor fetus.. at least give it a chance to be born and experience how bad living is... hehe.. but kidding aside.. people who give their votes hear arent thinking that straight..

just so you know, that site is fake.
Yeah, it was put up to show what you'd be voting for not birth in this situation if you vote pro-abortion. Very anti-abortion site as you can see.
Me, I'm anti abortion too.
But i stumbled upon this before, it actually ended up in the newspaper

Im neither pro life or pro abortion....
Im pro choice based on situation, readiness, womans needs, and Health reasons...
the only person capable of making that choice is the direct person(s) involved... no others.
it isnt a choice for others to make, its a horrid decision for anyone, requiring much deliberation
literally a life does hang in the balance..the prospect of this site, even if it is false is in horrid
taste, and deducts from the true power such a decision has on all involved. even as a social experiment.

im somewhat at a loss for words.

Yeah a friend of mine was able to track down the sites owners, they're involved with a load of right wing sites like one that pretends it's associated with Al Gore as a way of denouncing global warming and tricking people into thinking Al Gore is making up all the information he provides in an inconvenient truth, and they're also involved in pro-gun sites among other things.

That said I still think the site is sick and takes it too far the fact is that most people on the internet dont give a flying proverbial and would vote abort for the lulz. No matter the result I have a feeling these two connivers would have twisted it to their own ends if life won the vote they would probably say "see people do think abortion is wrong", and if the vote was abort the result acording to them would prove that "liberals are evil and the internet has corrupted people to be uncaring and amoral." A damned if you do damned if you dont situation.

Well personally I would like the child to be given the chance to live. Over all I am pro choice but on a personal level if it were my child I wouldn't abort it unless it posed a serious health risk to my partner I think that adoption is a much better option the child has a chance at life and there are plenty of people out there who want children but cant conceive. Given the amount of people in 1st world countries turning to 3rd world countries for children to adopt it's not like there is a shortage of willing foster parents out there.

I'll be honest... i have done some stupid things... dive into the pool from a roof top... but that definitely takes the cake for dumbest idea even for my standards of stupid and it takes a lot to convince me something is genuinely stupid

Genuinely stupid doesn't even makes sense. Plain stupid suffices.
