| Chaos | yeah. when i read the books (and i agree with dany, the books are amazing. especially body thief) armand was a 15 year old boy with looks of an angel (blond. innocent) and banderas looks anything but. i forgot underworlds . . . 1st one was good, but the 2nd was exactly what it is, a poor second. and i saw a movie named "embrace of vampire". in fact it was kinda erotica :d and sucked. (the vampires couldnt close their mouths because of the artificial teeth. he he) about the Brom stocker Dracula, i actually liked the book better even though it was long and kinda boring. the movie was nothing like the book. it couldnt convey the sense of horror or frustration of the characters, or the sorrow . . .

Because the book is written in diary entries and letters etc it is kinda hard to convert into a script. The characters in the book spend months wondering and dreading what is happening / has happened so far - a movie has its own time schedule and rules for storytelling - and much less time to tell the story. So it's natural that they have to leave things out and lose a certain amount of details that are crucial for the special atmosphere of the book. | |

| Chaos | yeah. sure. i know they have to change the story to make it into movie. but . . . for example harry potter movies. u can trace the book in the movie. though the director has omitted so many details. but when i read Dracula and then saw the movie, except for the main story line (jonathan going to Dracula castle. dracula coming to england and . . .) there was almost no similarity. . . for example 'mina' is a one of the main characters in the book and others rely on her innocence and faith to fight dracula. but in the movie she betrays jonathan and take D's side. thats why i said movie was nothing like the book

And I still agree with you, and gotta admit that the last time I read the book (read it three times or so), was when I was sixteen or so... *g* quite a while ago. So dunno for sure anymore but hadn't Mina sympathy for D in the book, too? That she betrayed J in the movie was another "we need more drama" thing, I guess *g*. The whole movie plot focused a lot more on the love tragedy of D, while in the book you never got insights into the Count. Well, anyways, what I meant is that it is one of the few movies that were made from a book that did not totally disappoint me. I mean, there are so many other movies that are called "Dracula" and the only thing they have in common with the original book are some names and a bad-ass vampire who gets his ass kicked. *g* "Wes Craven's Dracula" was one of them. No good, that one. So, for me Coppola's movie worked and he had every right to call it "Bram Stoker's Dracula". Btw for me Gary Oldman is one of the best Draculas ever. |

| Chaos | yep. i agree. sure they couldnt make the movie exactly like book. it would've been horrible :D i didnt mean i dont like it. i like the movie better than other 'vamp' movies (except Interview) and u r right, Gary Oldman was amazing in that movie (though i like him anyway) p.s. have u read Anita Blake?

| ∞ Spam Dance Queen ∞ ![]() | Nope, haven't read ay of her books yet, but they're already next on my list of "books to buy when I have some money left" *g*. Heard they're quite good so I thought I'd give it try. Back to topic: "John Carpenter's Vampire" was also one of the movies that were rather unsatisfying. Was funny though that the vampires burst into yellow or red flames when exposed to sunlight depending on their level of strength (that was how I interpreted it, anyways). I like vampire stories where they are more than stupid predators being hunted down and blown to pieces. Okay, they often get a cunning leader because the hero needs a proper counterpart for the big showdown, but... *yawn* If vampires aren't more than primitive walking corpsed who make funny fang showing faces I could as well watch one of the countless zombie movies... |
