Exclamation External HD problems!!!!

Okay, so this is the case. I was transferring some of my files to my external hard drive when there was a power failure putting me in a pitch black environment.

After power was restored i tried to acces my EHD again but it would't open or let me browse it. says so " X not accessible. File or folder is damaged".
BTW i have a packard bell store and save 500 GB if this means anything.

Now those jerks at customer support say i can kiss all my data goodbye. (75 gig and none of it is porn so this actually bites)

IMHO this is just BS and i'd like your more expert ideas???
Pretty plz?

a pall o'mine said to try and acces it through a linux command line. but you know. i'd like to find the esiest way.

yeah your friend might right..u can access your ext.HD with linux Ubuntu v.7.0 live CD version.
Just download desktop version here .You will have an iso format and burn it into cd. Setup the bios so the computer can boot from CD/DVD drive. Just follow the instruction for the rest.
But if u not familiar enough with linux thing, maybe u can try with software that works in windows environment such GetDataBack. This will quite easy for beginner user like me. First you have to know what kind file system that you use in your ext.HD is it FAT or NTFS. For further information, u can visit the main web for this software here .
To download FAT version click here
To download NTFS version click here
And to download step by step instruction click here

- Important Installation Note -

Do not install GetDataBack on the drive you want to recover! It is strongly recommended to proceed as follows:
Install the program to another computer, which doesn't have any problems. If you have a choice, choose the computer with the most RAM and is the fastest. Attach the drive you want to recover as a slave to this machine. Make sure the drive is jumpered correctly and is recognized by the BIOS.

Hope this will solve your problem...

I need a little more information to help you out. Can you not access a specific file or folder, or can you not access the entire drive? Also, if you could post screen shots, that will help me too.

We will get this fixed, mate! ;-)

I can't acces the entire drive. Explorer recognises it so it shows, but when i try to dubble click on it i get this error message in a normal error popup "Can't acces Drive H:\. File or folder is Damaged or Corrupted"

But i know wich file IS most likely corrupted (since the powerfailure happened during the transfer of this file).

Anyway, I appeciate the help and i'll get a scrrenshot up asap.

However i'm already implementing the advice Twilightzones gave me. Because of that i had to use another PC (one with linux on it) and for the weekend i no longer have the drive with me. But as soon i'll put it up.

Also @ Twilightzones Thx!!! I'm already giving it a go.

If you are already working on his solution, than thats alright mate. It just seems like a longer way that what I would do, but if it works for you, then thats alright. Let me know how well that program works. ;-)

If that program doesn't recover anything from your drive, or if your drive is otherwise rendered inoperable, then I'll guide you on how to check your drives integrity and the status (and repair) of your partitions. Keep us up-to-date!

Problem solved in the easiest way possible. So it turned out while i was doing Twilightzones suggestion, even Linux gave me an error message. But Through the linux command line i could easily acces my files. so in fact i could copy then to another hard drive and format my erring harddrive. However, the solution was even more simple.
All i had to do was letting win XP run the check disc it preforms when you reboot your system after an error. this solved my problem of not being able to acces the drive.

Good to know it is now up and running again for you! Yah, running Chkdsk was my simpler suggestion that I mentioned above. I didn't want for you to stop your current recovery process, change gears, and do something different. Chkdsk is a real hero. ;-)
