Writing an OS

it seems we have some computer-savvy users here.So i wanted to ask if someone here tried writing an OS?I have to do it as an assignment for school,and to be honest i am enjoying it.So i am looking for someone to talk to about it:)

As of right now,i am writing 2 separate operating systems.One of them is a standard command line/shell operating system.The other one is a custom Linux distribution.

I have no experience in creating computer operating systems,even though i have hacked,modified and rewritten cell phone Operating Systems and firmware for some other stuff,mainly media players.Has anyone else done something similar?
