The story about a high school transfer student's attempt to revitalize his underdog team has already been adapted into a television anime series (retitled Hoop Days by Bandai Entertainment). The Dear Boys musical follows the success of other sports-manga musicals such as The Prince of Tennis as well as manga-based musicals featuring bishōnen such as Shōnen Onmyōji. Thanks, dormcat.
