can my ISP really tell what I'm downloading or which websites I go to? ... Isn't this like an invasion of privacy?

"As previously reported, Singaporean District Judge Ernest Lau recently blocked distributor Odex's attempts to force Internet service provider Pacific Internet (PacNet) to release the names of up to 1,000 users that Odex says illegally downloaded anime." But to answer your question, yes. It is up to the service providers discretion whether they will release the information. As it states in the passage, many of the other ISPs willingly disclosed information regarding their customers to the anime company(and if you have any of those providers, I would highly suggest switching services and writing them an Anonymous email from your new ISP stating your disapproval and withdraw of support from their company for the actions that took) and that led to multiple court cases against the download'ies. The ISP providers do not have to disclose information and from my point of view they should not under any circumstance(well not any..). If my ISP was caught disclosing information regarding what I viewed or downloaded, you bet your ass that I would first of all sue them for disclosure of personal information(if it is possible, you would have to speak with a lawyer) and attempt at going for the anime companies themselves for pressuring ISPs to release confidential information of downloaders rather then uploaders or hosters(not sure if the second part is even possible, but if I had a lawyer, I would definately try to find a loophole and make a huge publicity problem for the animation companies). As for whether it is an invasion of privacy... that has to do with your country's business laws and the Terms of Service of the ISP(mainly a guess). I would never support a company that released personal information of its users. I think that they are taking it too far here, and SG ISP providers are caving in too easily. I fully support PacNet and I am going to write them an email right now containing this post in support of their struggle. |
