Default Elfen Lied Review

What do you get when you have a mass murderer that has a split personality that's sweet and innocent? You have Lucy, the female protagonist of Elfen Lied. It just so happens that Lucy is a diclonius or mutant with destructive powers. Lucy is like every other person in the world except that she has pink hair, red eyes, horns that look like cat ears, the use of telekinetic powers, and a desire for killing humans. In escaping from the prison that a man known as Kurama locked her in, Lucy easily kills every solider standing in her way. This may seem like standard work for a villan of anime, yet she did this without even looking at the people she killed. Due to her dangerous nature, she was forced to wear a helmet that covered her entire face. With only her telekinetic power, she caused much destruction in only a few minutes. As rivers of blood flow on the ground in which she walks, Lucy makes her escape. As a last resort, Kurama sends a sniper to shoot Lucy to end the chaos. The bullet then ricocheted off of her helmet, which resulted in a split personality being born. When she awakes as Nyu, her split personality, she has no knowledge of the world around her or even how to speak properly. The story then unfolds as she meets the boy known as Kohta, whom Lucy has a connection with.

Characters:
The characters of this series were very believable in Elfen Lied. The kinds of problems that they faced were the kinds of problems that people experience in real life. From what I've seen, no character was exactly alike as they had to go through some kind of problem that was worse than another character's problem. Some characters knew exactly how they could deal with their problems, while others didn't. 10/10

Themes:
The overall themes within Elfen Lied shocked me while I watched as I couldn't believe what I was seeing. There were murders , people enjoying the murder of others, abandonment, neglect, rape, torture, animal abuse, and much more that showed the darker side of humanity. Though I was shocked at what I saw, it made me think that there are actually problems like that going on in the world. Even though this is true, Elfen Lied did provide a lighter side to humanity as well, even though you don't see much of it in the anime. 10/10

Overall:
Every moment I watched Elfen Lied, I thought to myself that I should stop watching as it was extremely violent. However, I couldn't pull away from it as the dialogue, music, and storyline brought me back looking for the next episode. If you can watch the intense violence and splattering blood in almost every episode, which continues as the series comes closer to the end without becoming sick, then Elfen Lied is the anime for you.
