Umm... I'd like to point out that cyborgs are ultimately just machines with some AI programming. Machines can build machines, and code can 'evolve', so to speak, but they cannot 'reproduce' in the way that living creatures can. The cyborgs come about because living body parts have been cyberized. All cyborgs (at least according to the GITS lore) start out as regular human beings. Then they go through some medical disaster, where the only option is to cyberize the affected body part. Some stop at being partially cyberized, and some (like Motoko) end up having to become completely cyberized. Of course, there was this tank designer, Takeshi Kago (Ep 2 or 3, I think, in GITS 1), his parents were against him getting completely cyberized, even though it was the only thing to save his life from a terminal illness. He ended up asking a coworker to put his brain into an AI tank, to achieve pseudo-cyberization. It's really amazing how completely GITS can cover just about any debate/discussion topic we come up with in this thread.

Hmmm... nobody posted since my last post a few weeks ago... ouch. I wonder, how long this fanclub has been running... Maybe we should go out and challenge other fanclubs for number of posts, number of posters, duration, and level of intelligence contained in the posts (not spammy stuff, but serious discussions tying GITS to real life).

I think that the level of technology reached in GITS will be attainable by the world fairly soon, depending on my luck I may get the chance to see many of the things from the series brought to life. I remember seeing an article on a prosthetic arm that uses rocket fuel to lift up to twenty pounds, that's a pretty impressive feat with our current level of technology, Personally I think one of the biggest problems will be the energy source, we have hit a brick wall with the storage of power, so it will take a major technological breakthrough to make cybernetics more realistic. I know I wouldn't mind replacing some of my limbs, but I don't think it'll be a realistic option in my lifetime, the next generation seems likely to me

Most likely it will happen as in just a little later than in GITS, sort of 2030's or later, and the key to building a perfectly functional limbs and bodies is to somehow to learn to imitate how our real bodies produce energy from food. Otherwise the cyberized humans will be just a little more than a glorified robot.

I'm not saying there should be a capital punishment for stupidity, but why don't we just take the safety labels off of everything and let the problem solve itself?
