Mayuri as seen without his mask in the Anime, despite some missing elements from the Manga.


Mayuri's appearance has a very skeletal look to it with a skull-like visage. His fingernails are blue and, with the exception of the fingernail on his right middle finger, are all short. The one long fingernail is as long as the finger itself. In the anime, Mayuri is revealed to have blue hair and golden brown eyes when unmasked. He also wears a white hat with two ends that point to his right and a large purple scarf around his neck. He repaints his make-up every morning, as he always removes it before going to bed.[1]
To escape situations in which he risks defeat, Mayuri uses a technique in which he stabs himself with his Zanpakutō, transforming his body into a liquid blob-like entity, which is incapable of fighting but impervious to harm. This ability is related to the Bankai of his Zanpakutō. He is later able to reconstitute himself, at which point his wounds are healed. His physical modifications also appear to be undone each time he reconstitutes himself, although he is heavily scarred and his ears appear to be permanently removed. Reconstituting himself from a liquid also requires him to repaint his makeup.[1]
Mayuri has performed various experiments on himself, some of which include upgrading certain body parts to function as weapons or giving him otherwise useful abilities.
Extension Arm: His left arm can extend out like a grappling hook. This resembles the "rocket punch" attack which many anime robots have, particularly the chain-tethered "Boomerang Fist" technique from the anime Mazinger Z, which was also the first anime to use a "Rocket Punch" attack and the first to use that name for it.
Hidden Kusarigama: he is able to pull part of his ear out to form a scythe attached to a rope-like ligament for use as a kusarigama.
Camouflage: He can also blend into his environment with some sort of covering that flakes away once he reveals himself.[2]
Mayuri seems to be ambidextrous, as he wields his Zanpakutō in his right hand and his scythe-ear in his left (often simultaneously). In the anime's Bount arc, he briefly wields his Zanpakutō left-handed as well. While other ambidextrous fighting styles have been shown in the Bleach manga, it is currently unknown whether the manga version of Mayuri would be willing to fight with his Zanpakutō in his left hand.
Personality

Mayuri Kurotsuchi is a researcher and personifies the stereotype of the mad scientist. By his early actions during the Ryoka Invasion, he is displayed as one of the most sadistic and cruel Shinigami. He sees everyone and everything not as a living being, but as an object to be researched—including himself. He has little respect or regard for most others, and was even willing to turn his own men (who were not aware of his plans) into human bombs in an attempt to capture Uryū Ishida and Orihime Inoue for experimentation. He also withheld vital information about the Bount from the other Shinigami in order to capture one as a research subject for himself.
It is known that Mayuri's favorite food is pike fish, while he does not like onion. One of his free-time activities is reading every character published in Seiretei Communication. He himself publishes a serialization in the journal, titled "Effective Medication for the Brain", which apparently contains detailed instructions on preparation of medicine and their application. Surprisingly it is highly popular among the readers.[1]
In battle Mayuri likes to play with his opponent torturing little by little until they can hardly stand. This was shown with both Ishida and his espada counterpart Szayel. Every time he fights he uses it as an experiment testing his opponent little by little and himself. He also uses it to transplant microbes or other things in case they get away. Before engaging, though, he will make a research on his possible opponents to tilt the chance of winning to his side. It is seen that before the winter showdown, he is busy reading in the library with a note on the door saying, "Enter and I'll kill you." He's been doing this everytime he fights, against the Bounts and Espadas

Jūshirō Ukitake.


Jūshirō Ukitake, along with his long-time close friend Shunsui Kyōraku, was one of the first Shinigami to graduate the Shinigami academy and one of the first to become a captain. Ukitake, however, suffers from tuberculosis, which is the cause of his white hair, sickly appearance, and a considerable hunger, and as such could not regularly perform his captain duties. At first his lieutenant, Kaien Shiba, performed them, following his death these were performed by his 3rd Seat officers, Kiyone Kotetsu and Sentarō Kotsubaki. He often spends his time recuperating at Ugendō, his family's estate.
Personality

His favorite food is ohagi, and in his free time, he feeds the carps in the lake of Ugendō's garden, and also trims the bonsai there, despite lacking the artistic sense necessary for the latter. He also writes a novel series titled "Rejection of the Twin Fishes!" (Sōgyō no Okotowari!), in which the lead character, Sōgyō, is fighting to save villagers from evil. Sōgyō's catch phrase is "I will reject them!" and it is immensely popular among children in Seireitei.[1]
Ukitake is well-respected and highly honorable, and always treats those around him with respect, even those who are weaker or not as highly ranked as he is. As a result, he can be easily approached by many other members of Soul Society, who seek favours or advice from the Captain. Due to his high moral code, Ukitake will never let any harm go to either his underlings or those who attempt to protect them. Ukitake will never give up if he believes something is wrong and will break a rule to do what is right. He has a keen sense in judging people and knows when they are lonely, despite the fact that he will not comment on this. He observes that before meeting Ichigo and his friends, Rukia often had trouble opening up about certain things and was very lonely as a result. But he views a difference in her when she spends time training with Orihime.
In various Bleach omake chapters, Jūshirō is fond of giving people strange or unwanted gifts for no apparent reason, particularly Tōshirō Hitsugaya for their similar sounding names and hair color.
Due to his long-standing with the Gotei 13, Jūshirō is one of the most proficient combatants in soul society and always maintains a level of honor and integrity when engaging in battle, much like his best friend Kyoraku. He refuses to fight in the presence of a child or even with a child. He always maintains a semblance of respect for his opponent and is polite in combat situations.

Yoruichi in her black cat form.


Yoruichi Shihōin is an attractive, dark-skinned woman with golden-colored eyes and long purple hair, who can transform into a black cat for long periods of time. She wears a black undershirt, an orange over shirt, black pants, and light shoes for the flash steps. When she was a captain, she wore the same sleeveless and backless Shinigami uniform that Soifon is wearing now, but had a black choker tied to her neck. She also wore a long-sleeved Captain's haori.110 years ago, her hair was much shorter and cut in a style similar to Soifon's current hair-style without the 2 braids.
Personality

She is intelligent and witty, and is intimately knowledgeable of Soul Society and its workings, as she was the former leader of the Onmitsukidō and the Second Division's captain. Although of noble birth, she acts differently from other nobles. For instance, she instructed Soifon to refer to her without using honorific suffixes, but reluctantly settled for being called "Yoruichi-sama" ("Lady Yoruichi" in the dub). She also transforms into her human form directly in front of Ichigo on several occasions just to see his reaction to seeing her naked, which she even teases him about. Another note of her eccentricity is that she speaks in a dialect that elders use, such as identifying herself as "washi" (a term that usually old men define themselves with) instead of more feminine terms like "watashi" in both her human and animal forms (though specifically for the Japanese version).
Yoruichi tends to avoid battles, preferring to help after a fight is over, but she will step in if she thinks her side cannot win. She was responsible for training Chad and Orihime Inoue prior to their entrance into Soul Society. She also supervised Ichigo Kurosaki's Bankai training using the methods developed by Kisuke Urahara. Yoruichi prefers to drink milk, which fits with her practice of transforming into a cat much of the time.[1]

Personality

A seemingly foppish man with a disinterested air, Rose is one of the more laid back members of the group. He is frequently seen tuning his guitar and chatting with Love rather than paying attention to what is going on around him. He is interested in music and often discusses whatever singles have recently come out. He also enjoys reading manga, a pastime shared with Love and Lisa, although he becomes irritated if anyone spoils a storyline for him. Despite the disinterested behavior he exhibits, he seems to care for his fellow Vizards. He smiles happily when he realizes that Hachigen is happy to have met Orihime because she has a power similar to his. He also states that his "family" is growing due to Ichigo and Orihme coming to stay with them.
Appearance

Rose is a somewhat effeminate man with long, wavy, blond hair and a perpetually bored expression. During his time as a captain his hair was somewhat straighter and he wore a frilly shirt under his captain's robe. As a Vizard he wears a thigh length black coat with yet another frilly edged shirt underneath.

Appearance

Gin is fairly ordinary in terms of clothing, and doesn't wear any unique items. His overall appearance, however, is not as normal. Strangely he keeps his eyes constantly narrowed to slits (earning him the nickname "foxface" and he has only opened them fully twice (once during a flashback in battle with a group of Hollows and again during battle with 10th Division Captain Tōshirō Hitsugaya). The color of his eyes is portrayed somewhat inconsistently, being light blue on the cover of manga volume 20, but blood-red in the anime (the manga volume wasn't released prior to this however, which explains this discrepancy). Physically he is unusually thin and very tall with very sharp features giving him a very skeletal appearance. He bears unusual silver hair which has a purple tint to it in the anime (his name refers to his hair color; gin [銀] is Japanese for silver). He also keeps his face set in a wide mocking smile, which he only wipes off on rare occasions of annoyance, surprise, or confusion.

Gin is one of the most mysterious beings in the series since his permanent smile and slitted eyes combined with his heavy use of sarcasm and mocking politeness make it very difficult to discern his thoughts. Many find his demeanor and appearance rather unsettling and there are very few who were willing to trust him even before he was revealed as a traitor. Gin seems to be fully aware of the effect he has on others and more than once has been seen toying with peoples emotional states for his own amusement. Both Rukia Kuchiki and Wonderweiss Margera have shown to be rather frightened of him, Rukia noting to herself that she felt like she was being strangled by snakes whenever he spoke, even if it was not to her. In the anime, Gin speaks with a distinct Kyoto dialect, which is polite but indirect. His English dubbed voice is also formal and polite, but with a rather mocking and facetious undertone.
A few personal details, however, are known about him, like that his favorite food is dried persimmon, in contrast to his lieutenant. He likes it so much that he grew persimmon trees in the 3rd Division's quarters, and distributed the fruits even to members of other divisions. He dislikes dried taro since he once mistook it for dried persimmon. Ichimaru also likes to observe mortal beings, stroll in his free time, and his specialty is threading needles.[1]

Character Outline

Shūsuke Amagai is the new Captain of the 3rd Division, taking over after Gin Ichimaru's defection from Soul Society. He became a captain via the Captain proficiency test (隊首試験, taishushiken). It is known that he had to fight Kenpachi Zaraki, but the other Captain is still unknown. Most likely he was presented with eligibility by Captain Soifon, as the Patrol Corps is a division of the Stealth Force and to any other Captain he would have been largely unknown, except to her. Prior to his promotion to Captain he served as a member of the Patrol Corps (警邏隊, keiratai). According to Sajin Komamura, promotion of a Captain from the Patrol Corps is unprecedented. Amagai's promotion implies that substantial changes are taking place in Soul Society.
Amagai is shown to be incapable of holding his drink, collapsing even after eating sake-flavored pickles, and acting irrational after smelling the scent of sake in the air. Although he was initially looked down upon by his fellow division members, Captain Amagai's methods have since earned their respect. He also seems to favor teamwork and coordination between individual fighters, as he used these methods in the Patrol Corps, and teaches these methods when training his squad.

Seigen Suzunami the 5th Division Captain.


Seigen Suzunami can generally be described as a tall man with dark red hair. Coming from a noble family within the Seireitei, Suzunami served as a captain among the Gotei 13 during the timeline of the game in which he appears. Despite his serious appearance, he is shown to have cared very much for his sister as well as his subordinates. This former Fifth Division Captain was created by Tite Kubo for the Nintendo DS game Bleach: The 3rd Phantom and does not appear in the main Bleach timeline, thus he is considered to be a non-canon character. In manga timeline created by Kubo, Shinji Hirako serves as the Squad 5 Captain 100 years before the main Bleach storyline, which may indicate that the game has its own continuity. This is further supported by the fact that in the manga, Kisuke Urahara was only captain of the Twelfth Division while Shinji was captain of the Fifth Division (Urahara and Seigen are both captains during the game's events), both leaving Soul Society at the same time, due to a plot set up by Aizen.

Aizen as he appears in the Soul Society arc.


Prior to his departure from Soul Society he appeared as a mild-featured man with brown scholarly hair enhanced by square glasses.
However, during his ascent to Hueco Mundo, he removes his glasses and swept a hand through his hair, revealing menacing eyes and a very different hairstyle (swept back hair with a strand hanging in his face). As he had previously revealed to Renji Abarai the Aizen they all knew never existed, this would seem to be a visual representation of that claim.
Aizen is later shown in Hueco Mundo wearing clothing similar in style to the Arrancar; he is also seated on a throne, implying that he has some level of political power.
Personality

Despite his current villainous status and former position of authority, Aizen is a surprisingly polite, soft-spoken intellectual, often addressing his subordinates by their given names. He rarely shows any sign of alarm or distress and often has entire situations planned out well in advance.
Aizen initially appeared to be a very kind, well-respected captain and was looked up to by many, especially his lieutenant Momo Hinamori. This however was just a mask to disguise his true manipulative and very dangerous nature. In truth, he cares very little for his underlings (both past and present), and is willing to use almost everyone around him as pawns in his twisted game of "chess". In his own words, Aizen claims to be unaffected by any form of morals or ethics, which he views as a mere restriction on his potential. He is, therefore, willing to stop at nothing to further his selfish ambitions, including manipulating or killing anyone if he deems it necessary. He is fond of long, complicated, and somewhat convoluted plots, many of which do not have any real reason until he reveals them, and frequently appears to toy with his underlings for amusement.
During his time as a Captain, he was known to like tofu, while he disliked boiled eggs. In his free time, he often read and he also gave a special lecture of calligraphy at the Shinigami Academy, given that he excelled in this branch of arts. This optional course was immensely popular among the Shinigami students, and many of them felt great sorrow for Aizen's "sudden departure".[1]
As the current commander of his recently-acquired army of arrancar, Aizen controls his new minions either through acquired respect or fear. Ulquiorra Schiffer, one of his noticeably loyal subordinates, revealed in a conversation with Orihime Inoue that they are all "here to further Aizen's ambitions". For more rowdy individuals like Grimmjow Jeagerjaques, he keeps them in line through intimidation and mind games. The only one who appears to see through them is the equally-manipulative Gin Ichimaru. The arrancar Iceringer also claims that they follow Aizen because he has no fear, something which beings born from fear and despair find inspiring. Other arrancar occasionally follow Aizen for reasons unique to themselves, such as Szayel Aporro Granz, who follows Aizen with the hopes that he will eradicate the world of all non-hollows.
Aizen's true objective is to overthrow the king of the Soul Society. As he and his fellow traitor captains departed the Soul Society, he told Jūshirō Ukitake that "no one has stood on the top of the world", not even the gods, but he aspires to "stand in the heavens and end the unbearable vacancy on the world's throne". To do this, he needs the Royal Key (王鍵, ōken), a tri-pronged golden key that opens a portal to the dimension that the Soul King resides in. While the location of the key is known only to General Yamamoto, Aizen knows how the original was created and how to manufacture another. To do this, 100,000 souls need to be gathered together (which will kill all the entities used) and vaporize a significant portion of the area used in its forging. His sights are therefore set on Karakura Town, which has an unusually large concentration of spirit particles.

Character Outline

As he is the head of the Kuchiki family, he wears the same scarf that Byakuya wears now. He however does not wear the aristocratic hair piece that Byakuya does. It is possible that he was one of the first Captains in the Gotei 13 because during the Turn Back the Pendulum mini series he is shown as one of the 13 Captains and looks like Captain Yamamoto does now (facial features, signifying their age.) This is unlikely though, since it is also mentioned that the only old captains left are Shigekuni Yamamoto-Genryūsai, Retsu Unohana, Jūshirō Ukitake, and Shunsui Kyōraku. During the Turn Back the Pendulum Miniseries he is also shown introducing the current 2nd Division Captain back then, Yoruichi Shihōin, to Byakuya, who at the time was training.
It is not known whether or not if he is alive at the present storyline.

Appearance

Love is a tall man with thick black hair worn in a afro and with large sunglasses. During his time as captain, his afro was more rounded and well kept with long sideburns. As a Vizard, his hair is more unkempt and spiky, and has grown an amount of facial hair. He has also changed his captain's robes for a green jogging suit.
Personality

Love is a laid back and easy going man, usually reading Shōnen Jump or some of Lisa's erotic manga in his spare time. During his time as captain, he tried to keep the argumentative Hiyori Sarugaki in line, with little success.
