. : Clannad ~ after story ~ Discussion

I suspect the story line will cover the time between Clannad I and Clannad the movie. After all, there was little transition between the two, and the whole story about how the relationship between Tomoya and Nagisa developed was treated as a flash-back that was almost an afterthought. I just finished Episode 10, and can hardly wait for the rest of the series.

To those who have not seen Kanon 2006, it is well worth your time. I've watched it several times, and always see something I missed in previous viewings.

I wonder if they'll stick within the movie time wise, or go further along with the game storyline?

Highly seconded. Kanon 2006 is by far the best anime I have ever seen, and that is saying a lot. It is also by Kyoto animation (Clanand, The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, Lucky Star and more) so it is really well done.

Isn't Clannad the movie supposed to be simply a recap of the first season condensed into a 2-hour movie? After reading the synopsis on anime-planet, that's the impression I got.

There's one thing I don't get - the ending of the Clannad movie was different from the TV series. In the movie, Okazaki was involved with Sakagami, who was trying to save cherry trees in her neighborhood. Nagisa was somehow absent from the movie. The only consistency was Sakagami's sakura tree preservation efforts.

I just finished ep 10 of After Story, too.

If I remember correctly, the movie came out before the series, and it is not a recap of the series. It is the actual story line from Clannad and After Story put into a movie. I have not played the game, so I don't know how it is compared to that storyline, but I think it is supposed to be the same. There series is better because you get a better storyline off of a couple hours of a series (I think theres like 12 hours or jsut shy of from the second season alone) then 2 hours or just shy of from a movie. Gives you more chance to tell a story.

So, I keep wondering, what is with the little robot and girl? I don't remember them from deason one, and they seem to have something with the story (with the robot talking about the lights being wishes and that one boy [can't remember name] that became the cat having one of those lights and saying it was a wish).

The robot and gir stuff is, imho, a 'literary device' to set the mood of the story, something like a parable being told before the actual story. I'd encourage you to think about why some pretty effective storytellers open with well-known parables.

Never thought of it like that. So, makes me wonder what is it supposedto mean though. Is the girl supposed to be Nagisa and the robot Tomoya representing Nagisa and the girl dying, and Tomoya and the robot doing all that they can to save them but being unsuccessful.

Yeah, you can look at it that way. I would argue the unsuccessful part, though. I think the parable is trying to get the viewers focused on the fact that the robot and the girl are ultimately just keeping each other from getting lonely and falling apart. They do stuff for each other, the best they can, and that's the important part. Exactly what they do doesn't really matter, the fact that they're putting in the effort *for each other* is what the side story is trying to get us focused on. With that frame of mind, it's easier to get a deeper appreciation of the anime.

That side story is an example of a parable used in anime, other anime series use other stuff for side stories, such as character parodies (Kimi Ga Nozomu Eien), visualizing the thoughts of side characters (Midori No Hibi), or even taking viewers on a tour of the production studio (NANA) - timing and placement of that 'side story' is important. At the risk of sounding geeky, I'd like to point out that this is why English and Literature classes are important - they teach you about literary devices, what they are, and how to recognize them in stuff you enjoy - anime in this case. It also makes for more engaging discussion.

@ chris-chan: I gave it some more thought, and I realized that you have the characters in the parable flipped. The little girl actually represents Tomoya, while the robot represents Nagisa. The little girl is running around collecting all kinds of junk, and making things possible for the robot. Tomoya is the one running around doing all kinds of stuff for Nagisa, who by herself can't manage to do too much.

Nagisa fell sick for a while. Tomoya graduated, but Nagisa had to repeat her senior year. By herself, she could not revive the Theater club like she did before Tomoya graduated. Tomoya did not particularly care for the club itself, but wanted to do something for Nagisa. Thus, the Theater club is represented by the junk that the girl is collecting for the robot.

was a perfect demonstration of similarities in relationships.

Could be right, but the fact that the little girl is dying and still trying to make things work, and the robot is trying to support for her, sounds to me like the robot is Tomoya and the little girl Nagisa. But, like you said, I could have it backwards.
