Clannad: Another World, Kyou Chapter

It was said that this would be the last OVA. Im not sure how certain I or they can be of this claim, because I really wanted a Kotomi OVA also...But what can you do :3

Kyou was a really good choice to do the OVA about, she had a feminine side, it was so cute :3

<3 Clannad.... This series is epic.. There aren't the words in this world that can describe it's awesomeness... That's my opinion anyway...

TBH i liked the Tomoyo Arc more... Even though Kyou was my fav char ;)

The Tomoyo Arc was way more emotional and the Kyou Arc has a story that can easily fit into 2 episodes... Maybe it would have been better if they did that :)

BTW although i said all of this... I loved this OVA, it was fucking perfect and it was about time Kyou got some attention :')

I don't really like the direction of the alternate Clannad episodes, as there is too much (unnecessary) dissonance with the main story and all the elements which make it so endearing.

there are plenty of possibilities to work with within the Clannad realm, an alternate episode about Akio and Sannae's early romance developments would be great, Sunoharra accidently meeting someone he naturally (yes really, that would be what makes it interesting) gets along well with etc etc

the alternate chapters are not bad at all they just seem misplaced in comparison to the central storyline, and the themes that made Clannad that more compelling than most other anime, or other movies and books.

also what they did to Kyou in this chapter is kind of weird, her quintessential characteristics were contorted (if not entirely displaced) into a desperate girl that is mentally breaking down. If that was to make her more 'feminine' or seemingly approachable it is unnerving and very unfortunate.

Clannad + Afterstory are examples of how exceptional anime can be, the alternate chapters are good but largely out of touch with the original material and not of the same calibre or relevance.

all that said, I do think Ryou was underepresented in the core material, the one time that she actually expresses herself we hear a lot about her views on the nature of destiny and personal choice. It was surprsingly insightful, saying a lot about Ryou's inner thoughts and her own reflective nature.

Whew. I'm super late here. Just wanted to apologize, first and foremost, for not being here consistently. Doing too many things.

Now, onto the main topic.

... Aethan, you realize that Clannad wasn't originally an anime, right? It was a romance visual novel, which is a PC game where you take control of the main character and guide them through a series of choices which sets him up with one of the 5 girls (being Kotomi, Tomoyo, Nagisa, or Kyou, with Fuko still being in her sleepy dream state. I'm actually unsure if she wakes up or not at the end of Fuko's arc in the Clannad game...), and everything is tragic but ends happily.

Key and KyoAn were able to mesh three of the 5 girl's arcs into the main Clannad storyline (the arcs of Fuko, Kotomi, and Nagisa), but the Tomoyo and Kyou arcs were literally incompatible with Nagisa's (the main) arc, and couldn't be put together.

Look at it like this: Tomoyo's arc results in Tomoyo falling in love with Tomoya and then he breaks up with her due to his feelings of inadequacy. The story is heart-breaking in the visual novel, and beautifully done, but simply can't be joined with the Nagisa arc, because it focuses heavily on their break-up and eventual reunion. Unfortunately, one episode devoted solely to Tomoya's arc is sort of like taking the abridged version of the Hobbit and making it into a picture book for children. A lot of important character development and storyline is lost along the way.

Similarly, Kyou's arc is supposed to end up in a sisterly duel for Tomoya's affection, where Ryou wins the first bout by confessing to him first, but Tomoya eventually fell in love with Kyou instead because of his history with Kyou and his connection with her. It's also really tragic (and the OVA does a fairly good job of capturing the emotions of the arc), but it should be obvious that that arc is also unreconcilable with Nagisa's arc, since it focuses heavily on the triangular relationship. However, same as above, only having one episode turns it into an abridged version. The story shows the character progression of Kyou from happy-tsundere, dictionary-toting, flying super-kick dealing bad-ass to depressed and tragically confused woman, but they had to shrink that time span of several hours of visual novel reading to under 30 minutes of anime.

As for how you saw Kyou as under-represented and her character was twisted in the OVA... Well, she was under represented and her character seemed twisted due to both her arc not being compatible and her entire character having to be displayed in all of 30 minutes, but there were other reasons, too.

Look at it from this perspective. On the one hand, we have Kyou helping her sister 24/7 to get together with Tomoya. She sets up lunches, helps prepare the bentou, etc., since Ryou confessed her love for Tomoya. At the same time, though, Kyou is in love with Tomoya. As a tsundere character, her first character rule is "don't let others view your emotions". Throughout Clannad and After Story, it's pretty clear that she's got some emotions for Tomoya, but doesn't want to act on them (which was cleared up in the OVA as she didn't want to ruin her friendship).

So she's got a bit of a defense built up in the main arc, and when Tomoya shows the noticeable love for Nagisa in the tennis match with Tomoyo (helping boost the student council president-to-be's reputation, which was actually supposed to be in Tomoyo's arc, not Nagisa's, but oh well), she breaks down crying as well. With feelings as clear as those, is it any wonder that she's so distraught that her TWIN sister, who is like her in every physical way, was able to get Tomoya's attention while she was worried about her friendship?

It's the classic tsundere romance, in that respect, and I don't see Kyou's personality as twisted in the OVA versus the main plot. It's simply the side that was desperate for Tomoya's love as opposed to the side that was desperate for Tomoya's friendship.

omg best series ever! loved the entire thing and as Kyou is my favorite character i loved the final OVA. This series was honestly the best i've ever watch i love clannad and now i'm sad its over T-T
