Rep Power: 640 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | I found this one intersting Psychuatrists believe teems who spend most of their time in online socioties are indanger of becoing socioly inept and at risk of carrying out impulsive behavior such as violence and suicide Sorce BBC NEWS 'Mental risk' of Facebook teens Social networking sites may be harmful, an expert saysChildren growing up alongside the rise of social networking websites may have a "potentially dangerous" view of the world, says a leading psychiatrist. Dr Himanshu Tyagi said sites such as Facebook and MySpace may be harmful. He told the Royal College of Psychiatrists annual meeting people with active online identities might place less value on their real lives. And the West London Mental Health NHS Trust expert added this could raise the risk of impulsive acts or even suicide. It may be possible that young people who have no experience of a world without online societies put less value on their real world identities ![]() Dr Himanshu Tyagi West London Mental Health NHS Trust Dr Tyagi said that people born after 1990 did not know a world without the widespread use of the internet. He warned that the current crop of psychiatrists were perhaps not fully prepared to help young people with internet-related problems. While social networking sites offered great benefits, he said, there were potential pitfalls. 'Unstimulating' "It's a world where everything moves fast and changes all the time, where relationships are quickly disposed at the click of a mouse, where you can delete your profile if you don't like it, and swap an unacceptable identity in the blink of an eye for one that is more acceptable." He said: "People used to the quick pace of online social networking may soon find the real world boring and unstimulating. "It may be possible that young people who have no experience of a world without online societies put less value on their real world identities and can therefore be at risk in their real lives, perhaps more vulnerable to impulsive behaviour or even suicide." He called for more investigation and research into the issue. However, Graham Jones, a psychologist with an interest in the impact of the internet, said that while over-use of social networking sites could lead to problems, the risks posed by them had been overplayed. He said: "For every new generation, the experience they have of the world is a different one. "When the printing press was first invented, I am sure there were crowds of people saying it was a bad thing. "In my experience, the people who tend to be most active on sites such as Facebook or Bebo are those who are most socially active anyway - it is just an extension of what they are already doing."

Rep Power: 640 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | can we stay on topic please I find it amazing how the little things can be your downfall a huge well organized drugs smuggling organization was foiled when some tool put diesil into a petrol engine on a boat leading to the biggest ever drugd bust in Ireland Four still on the run in Ireland's biggest ever drug seizure Two 30-year-prison sentences and a 25-year sentence have been handed down to the three Englishmen involved in the country's biggest-ever cocaine seizure. Judge Sean O Donnabhain said it was obvious that Martin Wanden, Joe Daly and Perry Wharrie were fully committed and dedicated to the drug-smuggling operation, which was at the top level of the scale. It emerged in the sentencing hearing that Wharrie has a conviction for murder in the UK, while Wanden has a conviction in France for smuggling drugs and banned goods But up to four others remain on the run from both police and a feared international drugs cartel which supplied them with the drugs. The bungled €440m west Cork cocaine operation infuriated a feared Colombian drugs gang, leaving them facing millions of euro in lost profits. Joe Daly (41), Martin Wanden (45), and Perry Wharrie (48), were captured after diesel, instead of petrol, was put into the fuel tanks of the boat carrying the drugs. When the vessel capsized, 62 bales of cocaine, weighing over 1.5 tons, were thrown into stormy seas, wrecking a huge drugs operation that had been months in the planning. The three men were unanimously convicted by a Cork Circuit Criminal Court jury yesterday of possessing cocaine and possessing the drug with intent to supply. A fourth man -- Gerard Hagan (24) -- pleaded guilty to possession of cocaine for sale or supply on the opening day of the trial last May. Hagan, of Hollow Croft, Liverpool, was remanded for sentencing to November 5. During the marathon 10-week trial, more than 200 of the 577 witnesses initially flagged by the prosecution were eventually called. The jury retired to consider their verdict on Monday morning. Yesterday, the three defendants remained expressionless in the dock as the verdicts were returned -- with Perry Wharrie, of Pyrles Lane, Essex, briefly turning to acknowledge family members in the public gallery. Martin Wanden, of no fixed address -- whose wife committed suicide while he was in custody awaiting trial -- shook his head, while Joe Daly, of Carrisbrooke Avenue, Bexley, Kent, looked briefly at the jury. Judge O'Donnabhain confirmed that he will impose sentence on all three men today. The trial heard how the seizure was made after a powerful Rigid Inflatable Boat (RIB) capsized in heavy seas off west Cork. The cocaine is believed to have originated in Colombia. The drugs were valued at a staggering €440m because the purity level was estimated at 75pc, five times that of street-cocaine purity. But some experts claim the haul could have been worth up to €1.5bn on the streets depending on how it was diluted. Each of the three men denied three charges of possessing cocaine for sale or supply at Dunlough Bay outside Goleen, Co Cork on July 2, 2007. Two of the defendants claimed in direct evidence that they were entirely the victims of circumstances, coincidence and bad luck. Daly said he had only gone to west Cork as a favour for his brother who wanted an RIB delivered. Meanwhile, Wanden claimed he had taken the RIB out to sea on July 2 because a friend, Charles Goldie, claimed to have gotten into difficulties while out fishing. Wharrie claimed, through his counsel, that gardai had arrested "the wrong man".
