| Koi-Neko can be loosely translated as "Sex-kitten", so it should come as no surprise that this is a Magical Girlfriend story. Unlike other such, the GF is a true catgirl - she enjoys tormenting helpless creatures; hence, her interest in the protagonist. Nao, our catgirl, is neither standoffish nor violent, but Shinta, our hero, is a first year middle-school student, and reluctant to leap into anything. Shinta wanted a cat, but his father wouldn't let him have one; so the cat became a girl, and Shinta's father is fine with Shinta keeping a girl, but Shinta isn't sure about it. As a girl, Nao is Shinta's classmate, and quite aggressive in publicly declaring her interest, and in seeking advice from their classmates as to how best to pursue it. For Christmas, Shinta buys Nao a collar with a bell; their classmates find that strange. This manga has reached 5 volumes in Japan, only one chapter has been scanslated into English; it does not appear to be licensed. Author: Etsuya Mashima Sunday Comics GX |

Your first post inspired me to find and read the first chapter, and I'm not sure yet if this will be a keeper or a tosser; really need to see more of the story to make up my mind. The reason I'm asking about it turning into a harem is that a couple of other manga I really liked at first, Sekirei and Rosario+Vampire, have piled on so many girls that the original characters, relationships, etc. are getting lost in the crowd. (I'm still enjoying both manga, but not nearly as much as I did at first when there was more focus on the main characters.) -- Nick <mailto:tanstaafl@pobox.com> Prove your manhood: flame a newbie today! <That's sarcasm, folks...> |

The second catgirl had a true love that broke, I presume when her guy found out she was a cat; she therefore wishes to learn why Nao and Shinta aren't having that problem. She's not so much interested in Shinta as she is "a girl with something to prove". Megane-ko mega-neko-fangirl has no interest in Shinta himself; she just wants the society of his friends. Shinta has a romantic interest only in Nao, although his libido is more tom-cattish. There is a steadily expanding population of catgirls through volume 5. That being said, Koi Neko has the same kind of flow as Nagasarete Airantou (the manga, not the anime) which also has one guy and a swarm of girls who aren't actually interested in him as a person. Although in Koi Neko, the girls are stranded on a social island, rather than a volcanic one. -Galen |

The above comment isn't very encouraging for me: my problem with harems isn't so much the romantic complications, but the number of central characters. Too many times the series have so many characters all trying to be major characters that they wind up with no major characters: everybody's lost in a big mob, mindlessly milling about with nobody able to take center stage. I will keep reading for at least a few more chapters to see where it goes. -- Nick <mailto:tanstaafl@pobox.com> Nick's two rules of spammer talk: 1. Spammers lie. 2.
