| Now with Spoilers Magical Girls from another world come to this one and compete in a contest ... but these magical girls aren't humanoid. They're anthromorph bunnies with the minds of pre-schoolers and bodies by Sanrio (TM). First up, Kuromi, who escapes prison to steal the key to Dark Power. Kuromi is initially motivated by jealousy of MyMelody. Kuromi is assisted by Baku, who feeds on dark dreams, and is therefore able to find them. MyMelody, Kuromi's childhood friend, is sent after her, because they need someone who can use the Melody Takuto. By restoring harmony, MyMellow receives bright notes, which she collects in a music box. Many of the residents in MaryLand feel that MyMelody should subdue Kuromi and bring her back, but MyMellow is simply too mellow to favor such tactics. Although she does break down and cry eventually, that she wants to go home, MyMellow has been assigned a duty to protect the humans from the Dark Power, and she does take it seriously, if not aggressively. MyMelody is about half the size of the local cat, and quite defenseless. She is clumsy, weak, slow, soft, and cuddly, but fears being squeezed in a hug by humans. MyMelody can be readily knocked unconscious with even light force. MyMellow travels by holding onto her umbrella, which allows her to float through the air as if she were ballooning. Kuromi rides Baku, who can fly by spreading out his ears. MyMelody's combat style is to activate a champion who fights in her behalf; the champion can be quite aggressive. Onegai My Melody has an ensemble cast, with a repeated theme being the isolation of darkness, and the ensemble nature of harmony. (Although, we do have a lone biker who has outlived all his former comrades and continues on alone without being oppressed by it.) The show is also expansively toyetic, with My Melody dolls (and an assortment of clothes for them), My Melody House, My Melody ez-bake oven, my Melody tea set, etc, ... My Melody has been a Sanrio character for over 30 years, so she's had a lot of time to acquire stuff. Our central character is the middle-school girl Uta Yumeno. Uta fangirls over high school violinist Hiiragi Keiichi, and studies the violin herself, although she can't play actual notes with it. Kuromi first targets Uta because of her frustration at not being able to play well, but Uta rejects a self-playing violin, and is rescued by My Melody. Uta agrees to help Melody, and Melody moves in with her. Uta has 2 sisters (one older, one younger), a father, and several friends - a girly-girl, a boyish-girl, and a stalker-boy. Melody: "Your mother?" Uta: "She became a star." Melody: "... Sugoi!" Kuromi, after failing with Uta, moves on to Hiiragi; he initially rejects her offer on the grounds that he can get anything he wants without help, but then agrees to help Kuromi (instead of accepting her help, note). Hiiragi soon seduces Kuromi into becoming yet another worshipper in his fangirl legion. Hiiragi serves as Kuromi's power source during the first story arc. Hiiragi has far more darkness than Uta does harmony, so MyMelody is at a serious power disadvantage even against Kuromi. MyMellow relies on her human associates as much as possible. http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=5103 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/My_Melody The Onegai My Melody box set comes with 13 DVDs at 4 episodes each and a figure set. So the villain has the moment of truth instead. 45. Hiiragi becomes the Prince of Darkness; now malevolent, he reveals himself as such. 46. Uta confronts Baku over his role in the destruction of his own world. 49. As other Merry-landers land in the human world, a hippie with a big afro decides the pink sheep was made for him. No wait, this episode is about Miki, who lost her ability to write poems when Hiiragi revealed himself, learning new depths of her art from the pastel Beatnic. Win: Kuromi. The final note completes the Dark Symphony, and Hiiragi prepares to play it. 50. Hiiragi begins playing. Merry Land is destroyed, and the city overwhelmed by Chaos. 51. Henshin! As overwhelming evil sweeps over the world, our heroines try to fight back by singing a pop song. But it doesn't work, and the world is destroyed. End. No wait, the queen breaks into the ending sequence and rewinds time so they can try something else. 52. Evil is defeated. Hiiragi tells Uta she'll always be like a little sister to him. For no discernable reason, the series ends with everyone at a hot spring. Next up: Onegai My Melody Kuru-kuru Shuffle -Galen >> |
