It wasn't very good, even with its start as a parody of magic girl shows. (Can't anyone let "Sailor Moon" references rest after so many years?) As an aside - remember the days when "OAV" often meant better animation than run-of-the-mill TV anime? "Twin Angel" was an example of how there isn't any correlation between OAV and animation "quality" any more. BTW - I think that your interpretations of the characters are a bit off. The girls aren't arrogant - Haruka is a bit over-enthusiastic about her abilities as a magical girl, but Aoi is totally unsure of herself and says so to Haruka during the bedtime scene. And going back to the days of Sailor Moon, the SM gang got beat up a lot more often, and much more intensely, than either Haruka or Aoi. In fact, the major damage to Haruka was psychological, not physical. In any event, if you continue to follow this series, keep us posted. But I can't see myself bothering with more of it, nor with any TV series that might spin out of the OAV. BTW II - I still find it astounding that idea for the series really came from a pachinko/slot machine, but that's what ANN says and the official website appears to confirm. For those folks who are interested, the ANN link is here: http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=9235 And the official website is here: http://www.twin-angel.com/ Dave Baranyi |

| Galen wrote: > Recent DVD orders: "Zegapain" - ordered all six disks from RightStuf during the last Bandai sale; the last three are still on backorder after nearly three weeks... A mecha show whose primary emotion is existential melancholy rather than angst, I am finding it more powerful and bittwesweet with each episode. The actual mecha fighting is de-emphasized in favor of character development, which is fine with me. "Madlax" - because it was really cheap, and I liked the soundtrack, and Andrew Hollingbury recommended it. So far (I'm halfway through) it's OK for marathoning when you're bored US Cable TV: "Bleach". For the plot, and because I hope Orihime eventually turns out to be God. "Code Geass". I just learned today that, while the original character designs are by CLAMP, the animation character designs are by Takahiro Kimura (Betterman, Gaogaigar, GunXSword). This combo explains quite a bit about the appeal of the show. "Gurren Lagann" - the SciFi channel's broadcast format, and the dub, are somehow sucking a lot of the manic energy out of the show, which is one of the things that made the first dozen episodes so much fun. Maybe I should skip the broadcasts and get the sub-only DVDs? "Now & Then, Here & There" - This is a re-watch for me, but it's the first time in English. The dub seems well-done, and the story is just as painful as I remember. Fansub: "Slayers Revolution" - 'Cause everything old is new again. "Daughter of Twenty Faces" - for the old-school plot; for Tome; for Chiko's "SEED mode"; and for Aya Hirano's performance. Hirano plays Chiko with a beautuful bell-like clarity that is nothing like Haruhi's broiling, repressed frustration; or Konata's slightly raspy lazyness; or Lumiere's posh superiority. "Soul Eater" - I don't like this quite as much as Dave Baranyi, but it's still pretty good. "Macross Frontier" - An intricate Rube-Goldberg construct that aims for the same territory as "Overman King Gainer" and falls a little short. Also, Ranka is cute, "Aimo" is beautiful, and "What 'bout my star?" is maniacally catchy. I wonder if I should go back and watch the original "Macross"? I never saw "Robotech" when it was broadcast in the US. "Mission-E". For the skinsuited, curvy, tsundere Rally Vincent clone. "Yakushiji Ryoko's Case Files" - for Ryoko. This is what happens when a tsundere grows up and decides she both enjoys controlling other people, and has a real talent for it. "Wagaya no Oinari-sama" - because it is OK, which made it well above average for the winter & spring crop of shows. "World Destruction" slumps further and further into failure with each episode. A Production IG show that feels like a GONZO show. The lead female is named "Death". She fights with a bat'leth and hopes to commit genocide, but all she does is hang out with a couple of nice guys and wander around and accidentally help people. I should stop watching this, but there are occasional flashes of brilliant character art and animation. ("Why is he escorting the transfer > student home and not the girl who is here with her family?", > they ask.) The male lead is almost too much of a non-loser. He always seems to know what to say, and is never conflicted. > ToLoveRu - Ataru Moroboshi grew accustomed to random attacks > on his life; Yuuki Rito is developing panic disorder. Certain aspects of the show are reminiscent of "Shingu" (which I liked a lot) and "Tenchi", so I'd really like to like this too, and thus I also keep hoping it will get better. -dbm > -Galen |

Fiendish cliffhanger at episode 14, ending disk #3. |

That might qualify as sci-fi, it has aliens and parallel universes anyhow and is out on DVD by now. Only 14 episodes. There's also a .hack franchise film that came out a few months ago, called ..hack sprocket IIRC, I don't know if it's available as anything other than fansub right now, the clip I saw was a bit too cgi for my taste (cgi characters always seem to be rather wooden, like watching Thunderbirds) but it was quite stylish looking. |

They've all been reviewed by other folks in the past, so I'll just list them. Current-series Downloads: * Daughter of Twenty Faces (I know it's not everybody's cup of tea, but I'm enjoying it) * Slayers Revolution (my "guilty pleasure" for this season - after the disaster that was the last movie, Lina and the gang are back in full form!) * Wagaya no Oinari-sama (because it's fun!) * You're Under Arrest Full Throttle (assuming they ever finish fansubbing it... I'm a die-hard Fujishima fan; how could I pass this one by?) (And I've got a couple of episodes of "Nogizaka Haruka no Himitsu" to try, but that doesn't count unless I actually do watch it.) Current-series R1 DVDs: * Lucky Star (again, because it's fun!) Older R1 DVDs that I'm re-watching: * Magic Users Club (once more, because it's fun... and because it's a well-paced, tightly-plotted, *good* story - unusual in shonen romance) Hmmmmm... that's down from last summer... -- Rob Kelk <http://robkelk.ottawa-anime.org/> e-mail: s/deadspam/gmail/ "I'm *not* a kid! I really prefer the original Japanese with subtitles. * Stellvia - shojo space-opera, 26 episodes. Either sub or dub is good. * Starship Operators - war-story space-opera (not as dark as BGC), 12 episodes. Either sub or dub is good. And one for a bit later in the year: * Rocket Girls - somewhat-odd near-future SF, 12 episodes, won't be released until this fall. Rumour has it that it'll be sub only. -- Rob Kelk <http://robkelk.ottawa-anime.org/> e-mail: s/deadspam/gmail/ "I'm *not* a kid! Nyyyeaaah!" - Skuld (in "Oh My Goddess!" Well, truth be told... ah nevermind. I'm a serious SF buff, so I like everything for Serial Experiments Lain, Patlabor and Ergo Proxy (which I particularly adored) to Death Note and Wolfs Rain. Everything in between is fine. I have a soft spot for female protagonists too. -- x theSpaceGirl (miranda) http://www.northleithmill.com -.- Kammy has a new home: http://www.bitesizedjapan.com |
