I didn't really give it too much thought to be honest. But now that someone has said who he is, it does seem correct.

However, it makes me wonder why Archer didn't show his feelings for Saber at all, nor did it seem like he would be strong enough to defeat her.

it's probably because in the first story arc, the archer was attacked too suddenly and saber gave him critical damage. It is been told in the first story arc (the original game) Archer fought Berserker six times before being killed. Saber had more problem fighting Berserker, even in the anime.

Moreover, Archer got an incomplete summon which meant he couldn't remember his identity and past life memories. which should mean his feelings were not there with him.

As for the other story arcs: (of the original visual novel game)

Wow didn't even realize that. After watching the anime i had wanted to pick up the game is it worth it?

The game is worth it. Of course the Archer (UBW) arc isn't complete yet and should be released sometime soon tho. The Fate Arc (Saber) gives a bit more backstory and explains all the technical stuff in great detail. =P

In the third story arc, Archer was too busy fighting Black Saber.
