If you think of it another way, the Death Note could be used to help people. Not sure if it'd work but you could write in the note, for people you care about e.g. family members etc 'dies on' then write some date that would make it so they die at a ripe old age and you could put that they pass away peacefully in their sleep. But you would then know when you're family members would die. As I said, i'm not sure if it'd work either =P Been a while since I finished the series so I can't remember all the rules ^^ Just a different way of looking at it.

I believe the day cannot be more then 23 days. So 23 days would be the maximum you could put. In other words, you might make them died earlier then expected.

If I had the Death Note, I would kill random people in the most creative ways possible, so that I can experience them and see how that would affect a good novel.

Well i wouldn't use the deathnote at all but it be good to have a shinigami(death god) friend, even though if you don't use it, the shinigami will erase your memories of having the deathnote.

guys, this is a serious thread, i wanted to ask this question myself once, pls answer seriously.

if i would find a death note i would keep it but never use it. ruling the world with a deathnote is immposible, even light which was a real genious couldnt get away from the police hands, they catched him in the end. using the death note makes U more evil than any other thief or murderer. using it for the safety of your family- who r we to judge who needs to die and who isnt?! we r mare humans, if the "gods" decided that somebody must die, it means he/she Will definitly die, no matter who u kill to prevent it. using this powerful note makes u WEAK. so the conclusion is that i would never use it and i would keep it in my hands that there wont be a chance that a rotten man will pick it up and will use it.

I'd use it to help keep a proper balance. Since I don't really know how that is supposed to work (on keeping balance) I'll just say I would, because nobody's perfect :)

Not one person could make everyone happy... so you kill the minority of people who aren't happy. But then that would make some of the happy people unhappy, so then you have to kill them and eventually you're stuck with perverts, pedo's, and rapists.

Well,I don't know if I would use it, my teacher always used to say nobody deserves to die..if I didn't think soo much then I would say murderers..but if I killed one,then I'm murderer...
