I don't think they really liked him as much as respected him.. It is pretty similar though

(Task Force) Well, I don't think anyone there even considered L as a friend, although Light and L were showing it off as if they really were friends. As far as respect is concerned, the taskforce already knew L's potential and they saw it live during the "Lind L. Taylor" thingy. Most of them were awestruck and thus might've started liking L as some great personality. Near and Mello, they saw L as their challenger. Someone they always wanted to beat. It's the same as Near v/s Mello, who catches Kira first and proves himself better. If L was there, I'm sure it would've been L v/s M v/s N.

L was more respected by the taskforce then liked. He often made a decision/move that the taskforce hated in the start but then thought he was a genius. So they basically hated L but strongly respected him, which is why they stuck with him till the very end.
