Hmm... perhaps the manga is somewhat diferent to when it shows how Light's dad died or if Light's dad rejected the idea of taking the Shinigami eyes, Light would have something else planned as well as he might have no choice but to kill his dad if he gets in the way of things.

Judging from the rules of the deathnote, there is no such rule that when you use the deathnote to kill too many people on one day, you will die the next day scheduled, but there was a rule made similarly to that when Light created the fake notebook and made up a rule which was "If you don't kill anyone within 13 days using the deathnote, then the user will suffer his/her own death" something like that.

Therefore, if Light's dad was to survive that incident with the mello gang having the shinigami eyes, he wouldn't die the next day unless if he scheduled his own death on that day. How i think he'd originally die is probably cancer or a heart attack which I agree above.

What I meant was that based on the rules of Death Note, if one made a eye trade for Shinigami eye, he also give up half of what he have remaining to live. He died the same night he made the trade, or the morning after, which imply if he haven't done the trade, he would have live twice as longer.. which obviously is not by much. I was just speculation on possible way for him to die, whould he have not made the trade and live what have remaining of his live, which mean a day, maybe two after the trade. Confusing? hahaha

well seeing as he looks Yagami's dad looks old, he would live on for longer of he didn't make the trade for the shinigami eyes but he did so obviously thats his life span halved. well he looks old in the anime so I'd say if he wasn't sick of any illness, with his lifespan halved, id say he'd at least live for about 1 more week if he was to survive with the shinigami eyes.
