i agree with aca and shining tears, all studio ghibli's production are awesome.
and all hayao miyazaki's creation are too.

but if i should named titles, i would go for :
- voice from distance star/hoshi no koe.
- kanon (though i love clannad, but to me, kanon beats clannad hard on artistic)

- ef-a tale of memories. don't be confused by the story, it's an art, obviously hard to digest, lol. look at the art style. none, match this style.
-Earth Girl Arjuna. i highly recommend this one. the story is like most 'earth saving hero' plot, but in a more artistic way.

Death note has very good animation *even though the show isn't really my taste* so i don't understand how you say they didn't put in effort. One show i would say that has the most Unique and identifiable characters that are dont have any lookalikes is Eureka Seven (Also very good story and animation *created by BONES which is well renowned for their good shows*) Other very stylized shows are Gurren Lagann, Soul Eater, Darker Than Black, Black lagoon, Samurai champloo. There are many nice looking shows but these are all i can think of since I'm tired xD. Also, the shows other than Eureka Seven, Gurren Lagann and Soul Eater have adult protagonists like you want. But, due to the quality of the shows, i suggest you don't overlook the ones i mentioned.

indeed, I liked death note's style, they only went really creative with it at dramatic moments though like L's tragic death >_<

i really enjoyed the FLCL art style
how they used alot of contrast -dark mostly- and how it was blended. idk just my opinion. and ya GitS is awesome 2.

Actually, 5 centimetres per second is not a production of miyazaki / ghibli.. its from makoto shinkai

Elfen Lied definitely has my favorite art style, by far. Could just be me though ^^;
