What should the Age of Consent be?

So people don't make mistakes over 18? You think people are 'mature' enough to have sex after that? There are lodes of unwanted pregnancies after people are 18.

I appreciate that sex is a pretty traumatizing event, and something over which great care needs to be taken. Sometimes young people have sex and it ruins there lives. Sex should be used responsibly.

I think what he/she meant was, if the person got pregnant at 18, at least she would be able to find a decent job..

abyway, I chose 20 instead of 18 because here in my country, most 18 y/o are still immature kids unlike in most countries. it's partly because of the culture, I guess. kids are kept in their parent's nest for as long as they like.

I still think 18. I'm 17 and am lucky enough to be very mentally mature. Most teenagers my age are idiots, to be completely honest. My school had 40-ish pregnant girls (we have 1000 students). I'm not saying all of them didn't practice safe sex. The ones that did, I think it sucks.

Most guys and girls are irresponsible until they are in there 20's. I say so just to be safe.

I think people shouldnt need an age of consent but since most people are retards and dont know how not to get pregnat and shit like that they should be at 21. When you can think about your actions you should think of what you are doing and all the consequences they could bring. STD's Death Pregnancy etc.

At my house we have certain rules, like in any other Mexican household. You cannot have a bf/gf before you are 15. You may do whatever you want after that, IF you are mature enough to think of the consequences. Ur parents decide when you will be allowed to have a bf or gf if they thought you werent mature enought by when you turned 15. If u cheat and try to have a bf before they age they told you. Your bro or sis will beat them up good enought for them never to even talk to you again so you decide. I guess most families dont do that but my family loves fighting so what can i say. In my family we never had any problems except with 1 of my relatives. Now, we are watching her/him die slowly. its sad, but you know what worst she/he has a baby and she/he will have to leave him sooner rather than later.

Can you imagine the pain of knowing your kid will be left there and see you die. For your kid, to cry over the pain of losing a parent. well I kinda have to go so ill check in later

Actually here in Western Australia it's 16 for both.

Honestly the age of consent law is one of the hardest laws to enforce, as matters of a sexual nature are usually kept private unless rumours are spread.

I myself believe that at 16 a teenager should, at least I hope, be able to make a conscious and adult decision as to whether he or she should have sex. Although if the age were lower I can imagine that some wierdo would take advantage of this and hook up with someone with an age gap of like 15 years. I've seen this happen to a friend of mine.

Whatever the case is, if a teenager is educated about the proper conduct I don't see why we should restrict them from doing something that is, naturally, human.

Hmm. There are A LOT different viewpoints from which you can anwser on this topic. Ill just ask; Is it about age, physically.. or something you're supposed to understand, know, realise with that age?
Depending on your viewpoint on that one, you can give different anwsers.
First is, mostly, you're hinting towards the intelligence that comes with the age, right? Because let's be honest, wether you're physically 15 or 17 when having sex, the situation isn't really going to change.
But on the other hand, I've seen kindergarden students with more sense of morals than most people of my age, and older (let's say 17). But to say that 8 would be a good age of consent.. no, that's kind of extreme.

I used to think that... you can only have sex when you are already married with the person you love. But someone made me realize that... it's the intimate thing you can share with your bf/gf... so I think... it's okay to do it now... just know what you are doing, what are the responsiblities you have and the consequences you are going to face =3

Really hard question to answer. It really depends on the person and how/when they really mature in life. Some people become mature enough to make "adult" decisions as young as 15 whereas others plateau themselves up until the ages of 25 to forever.

I think the current law in N.A of 18 is alright. Thought the huge number of teen pregnancies means we're obviously doing something wrong. I feel it has much to do with pop-culture (which the young teenage nation LARGELY follows) glorifying sex so much. Yes.. sex is fuckin amazing... but following examples of the sluts and groupies who musicians love to write about does NOT make them cool.

If I had to CHANGE the age of consent.. it would more than likely be at 16.

Should be different for individuals, as people mature differently. So once the person fully realizes the possible consequences, it should be fine. Usually this is around 12-14
