Anime/Cartoon Whats the difference?

I recently read a thread "Heard of Samarui Jack?" And it left me wondering....What is the differences between anime and cartoons. Me personally, I thought "Anime" was Japanese for Cartoon. But, I am wrong, once again. Some one set me straight. I would really like to hear some of your opinions.

Cartoon is drawn only by americans and has totaly no cute drawings or meaning, while anime is a totaly diferent thing. it has plot, interesting story, nice characters, drawings and a meaning behind all that while cartoon is just for brainwashing little children.

i could go on and on with the diferences but i don't have time to post stuff XD

For me, I think one of the biggest differences is how expressive the eyes are in anime.

Cartoons are for kids bcoz:
1 not one drop of blood comes out from injury.
2 the hero must always win(in tom and jerry poor tom is always tortured by hideous jerry)
3 always a happy ending
4 characters have box shaped face
5 stupid emotions for kids
6 no style(most of the time underwear)
7 no good action
and so on...
on other hand anime is mainly for adultsXD:
1 whatever its rate is always hav to hav blood(dbz is actually a very violent anime where little babies like gohan are bitten up all the time)
2 stylish characters
3 story has its own Japanese touch which is cool
4 not always a happy ending.
but some cartoons i like are exception.

Busted, lol. Tom & Jerry, Bugs Bunny, and Wile E. Coyote are some of my other faves. Shows how oldschool I am. lol

There really is no difference. Cartoons and anime are more or less the same thing. It's just that the word cartoon is generally associated with English animation wheres anime used for Japanese animation. The content does differ slightly from country to country but not really any more than in other forms of entertainment like music or live action movies.

In the end, the only reason anime and cartoons are ever separated is because there are so anime fans that think everything in Japan is made of gold and/or are just too scared to admit they're watching children's shows.
