    Default Language.

I don't approve of coarse and vulgar language. If it is used in my classroom that student is asked to leave. If my children used (when they were younger) it they would get their mouiths washed out with soap or dosed with castor oil.

Expletives have has no purpose as far as I'm concerned. It's not even eredeeming when people try to use it artistically like in a movie. I don't swear, I don't say those words or anything like them ever. I don't like hearing them either. Not only does it shows is a disrespect for whoever you are talking to but is shows a disrespect for yourself.

hmm I do agree I dont swear in Russian(my native language), but i sometimes swear in english since english does not produce such fould words...or at least they do not seem on the same level as russian swearwords...
however I still dont like it, and I prefer not to use them, and if I do use it, I do it if i am very upset by something, but I do not swear at other people...

i can understand classrooms, message boards, and other places but to me that type of language is every day. if i am by myself a lot more of it comes out than normal. my work place very seldom. however its not being disrespectful not towards anybody its used a venting and to describe certain things. is it rude behavior maybe in some people's eyes if they are so prone to looking down at others. is it their moral upbringing, are they so upper class that they don't understand what it is like for us common folk to go through every day life knowing that we have to struggle to get the things we want. or is it because they feel that they are better than us?

a very good friend of mine whom i lived with briefly before moving to where i am now one day threatened our friendship because of the language.. yes i dropped 1 F-Bomb and several much less PG movie language or mild profanity and she while we were talking fact was i was upset about some things. and when she said that i asked her if she wants to be that petty and throw away our friendship because of something that stupid fine.. i reminded her that i am upset, i was already in a bad mood and that she called to find out. i already told her that i didn't really wanted to talk and then i started crying... she hung up to call me back an hour later and i was still upset but not as before and she apologized. and so did i.. i knew she wasn't keen on that language but she knew too that i used it. she asked me why i changed.. and i said its because where i am at now i am a meaner person and that the fun loving, spotaneous person was gone.. because of how i was treated where i am living. im glad that we are still friends... but language is language but just because somebody doesn't like the way one talks.. doesn't mean that you should force that upon somebody. now my parents didn't let me cuss as a kid fine with that i did get my mouth washed out with soap one time by my dad. in my teen years i could get away with certain words if they were around. and now in my adult years my mom makes jokes about it and so do i say she taught me to swear and that she could make a sailor blush!

i had this one guy who i worked with who was insulting me and disrespecting me so when i told him what he could do with a 2 bad words and a goat he got all weirded out and ran over to our supervisor and when i told them that he started it to begin with it was dropped. i will let it go here.

They are just words. Nothing more, nothing less. I'm not sure why people get all defensive about them. Is it because society has this fear of them now that they are "taboo"? It's rather pathetic in my mind that people are scared of words. All in all, its how you use them that makes them bad. You can use a lot of "good" words in derogatory ways and they become just as bad as the "taboo" words. (Ex. "Up yours").

I have to agree, it is pathetic. To me, the important part is the *intent* behind the words. If you intend to be offensive with what you say, it does not matter what words you use. On the other hand, I don't mind the so-called 'colorful language' if the intent is to be colorful, and be yourself, but not offending others. Some people may find that kind of language 'crude', because they think it demonstrates a lack of knowledge of other words. I personally disagree. I speak two languages, English and Russian, I can swear in both, and BTW, I can say that the specific expressions are very language-specific, they don't translate well from one language to another. To me, occasional use of colorful language merely demonstrates the creativity of word choice...

I don't like hearing kids say it, but once people mature I think it is all right. I usually try to constrict my language still, I don't saying them myself. All my teachers allow swearing if it is not constant.

    Your point?

We had some friends over last night along with the new neighbors who brought their kids, three of them ages 10, 12 and 15. The boy it seems has a classic case of potty mouth and I did have to mention it to his mother as it got to be a mit much for me. Her comment was she didn't know what to do and I can see why her husband wasn't much better. There was really no reason for it. JUst things like, "Them F football players" or the "Fn government" it was really too much.

Why? Why is it too much? Again, they are just words. Was he directing the curses at you? No, it was the football players and the government which in my opinion "the F word" is very appropriate.
