Why can't I see the subtitles / Why can't I play the file?

For the benefit of our staff's sanity and to save us from answering emails and posts containing these questions for the Umpteenth time beyond counting we are providing the answer here.

There is nothing wrong with the anime files, if you cannot open our files or see the subtitles it is because your media player does not contain the codecs necessary to play it on your pc properly.
