It'd be awesome if a meteor the size of earth was going to collide with earth in lets say a month/week. And everyone knew.

Hysteria and bad news travels quicker than the good >_> though the few people who were fooled by it are idiots >_> I listen to the original broad cat and the say multiple times that it's a radio show based off the book and not actually real

Despite all the things, the future is still hidden from us.... yet i could estimate that we will soon be forced to put microchips on our brains, plug them in computers and turn into cyborgs...the scientists have already prepared the blueprints of 'replacers'...

that future is inevitable.
but hope it delays, you know the first use of it will be for political causes.
government can get control of us; censor our mind (!); keep the check everything on us alive and online ...
also not only we have enough problems with viruses, the computer virus can also affect us or at least our robotic side (god knows what severe things might happens), imagine also a trojan lives in your mind ( our at least in your computer part, they can see everything, your bank account, your privacy, your sole health even is in danger!
though about bright side, everyone can example, like mine would be that we can use net by closing eyes and imagine and while being "day dreaming" we can search stuff, watch and listen on net ...pretty weird, huh?
but still the costs will be more high than the gains.

Atsirk: that's sort of what I was trying to say, but while we are individual we still have to work together as a society or else no benifet is gained

rebbie, I might want to add, from "individuality is important" I DID NOT meant "individualism".
this "-ism" is far too wrong to put on things, it's necessary for categorizing things but not something to be followed, any fanatical acts of "-ism" which they call themselves superior than others is false. sadly these things happens in world of philosophy. our human "knowledge" makes many branches which includes these "-ism". as been said, they are for simplifying and categorizing our human understanding, and in conclusion, they all are connected and any of them is as important as others, all of them make our "knowledge".

but I digress ... so what I meant was, the individuals must be center of [perhaps political] attention, as we are not mere animals, we're humans, we live in this world ones and every man counts, every live is important, none is to be wasted on any circumstances.
it's not about abandoning "society", in fact the history of mankind made enough lessons and progress in governing and maintaining society (for now of course), then we should make "theories" about individuals instead (though I think it's not a fitting word).
and if every individual get their support, they can evolve and of course the benefits goes to all too, which means the society itself!
speaking of which, have anyone heard "will to power"? it is something that plays great role in individuals, though I'd like to discuss it further with someone who knows more.

I aslo say, I feel we won't be around much longer...not like I think It will end in my life time, but within a few generations

magnify that.. soon there's a really huge possibility that we may die out with the current trend in mutation especially in viruses and bacteria.

so you believe we will meeet our end because of a disease?

of course as our lads said before, we're feeling our extinction. but let's zoom it in : we, our generation - us - (and maybe next generation too -who knows) are "golden generation" which means we decide not only our fate in this world but also our mild future, and also savings of past. but still greed, stupidity, lack of sympathy hunts the world, and more delaying means more destruction for our future and others, and also a waste of a good deal of knowledge of past which will be buried and left for alien adventurers to be discovered and mark us as an "ancient race" !
okay I said enough about my philosophy, let's get to practical fields :

so what can one do to save the world and humans in it ? well, don't be frustrated, every man and woman counts , you can at least for example :

-try to live at best and CHOOSE the best options exists in your life, and try to be profitable for society in the end (in the end because while in progress one may not or can't help others, because of the struggles of others; not having a permanent foothold in life; ...)
-be vigilant and be knowledgeable : sometimes you might wonder why in a long time you've been using something all day which hurts you a lot. from smoking to using anti-bacteria soups ( yeah, they do damage more than healing, you can't "kill" bacterias, it's not only damaging environment and yourself (as they are good bacterias exists too where they help you) but also worsens the situation a lot more! strengthening them perfectly !!!
-be kind to your environment : you might think of your surrounding, but it's far more than that. you know the things you buy no matter the price are made from hard work and many things takes much much more time for nature to reproduce the raw materials humans might need.
don't throw your left-overs away if it's still consumable; don't "consume" clothes like foods, use them wisely; remember to dump the certain junks for recycle, like -for example-things which contains quite a noticeable aluminum, it is far cheaper AND easier to recycle than to find the raw materials and spent millions of dollars to melt them.
-always be ready to learn more : life is learning ( as in my philosophy knowledge = existence = time ), one who stops losses and one who goes on keeps "living" ... knowledge is power as bacon said.
- and more ... lol I have to think, my finger aches because of this typing.

@author, i don't really agree with the whole we are not mere animals, we're humans part, i think that is a bit off, what makes us better than every other living thing out there? And no i am not religous or a Greeny :P.

I think that in the future things will get worse before they get better. we have harnessed this planet like nothing else ever heard of or scientifically proven, i think we have just harnessed it wrong, when things get really bad humans are resourceful and i believe we will be alright, what i see for the future is the possibility for the "Final Frontier" Space, colonizing and exploring the universe but other than that who evevn knows, we may have almost reached our limitations of science but then again thats what people thought about going into space and the moon, i think it is VERY uncertain

As for the part of the Dutch drowning other places are rising from the water like the lands what were covered by the thick ice age ice 11 000 years ago. Even Estonia(my country) rises about 5 mm a year.

Colonization is essential. Why?

First of all we have the opportunity to start the life from blank sheet meaning that we may not turn new colony into resource wasting society we have the chance to start over. Let's say you write an article full of mistakes what would you do: correct all the mistakes on that same paper or would you instead take a new sheet of paper and write the article over this time mistake free.

Secondly Earth cannot contain all the human beings that are here even now. There is so many of us that we basically live in a population dept. We may produce food enough ... at least enough for the richer places ... but soon our fields are exhausted and eroded soon happens the "Oil Peak" (don't know the meaning - use the all mighty Google). Clean water soon is a luxury like in the land of Mongo in the series of "Flash Gordon". What if it is too late to save earth? And happens same thing what happened in the "Easter Island" - with no resources left there's no way to save ourselves. Therefore we should act before it is too late.

It would be best if we abandoned Earth all together. You might go like "This is blasphemy! This is madness". But when we have the technology to go to other planets then we surely have the technology to live in space or otherwise inhabitable planet. So why should we continue ruining the fragile ecosystems of Earth when we have to possibilities to live in places that no life form lives in. If earth is left on it's own then it is like a huge national reserve. Who knows mayby then another civilization arises. "But this is our home!" you might also say. Well ... it might be your doom also if not cared after enough.
