Yes, thats right, its time again.
I thought I would be the one to initiate this this year.
2011 has brought us many new games, and many re-vamps of old games. I have to admit my bank account did suffer just a little bit due to all the releases that have come out in 2011 alone. So, I ask all ye hardcore gamers, casual gamers, nerds, geeks and people who beat us up, what is YOUR pick for 2011 as 'Game of the Year'
*Will be attempting to put a poll*
I can list 10 items for the poll. Some of you will agree with my choices and some of you will flame me for not putting in your favourite game.
Remember that GOTY is a prestigious award and should be chosen wisely, based on many catagories and not just popularity.
So, without further adure, lets get the ball rolling.
The games in which I have narrowed it down to:
Portal 2:
Portal 2 I thought was just fan-fucking-tastic. It was a mix of comedy and very in depth story (no, really). Unquestionably, the game I've had the most fun playing this year, and which has generated the most unanimous positive buzz has been Portal 2.
Skyrim:
We all knew this game was going to be in the count. The sequel of Oblivion. Probably the most anticipated game for 2011. From Daggerfall, to Fallout 3, and of course the Elder Scrolls series, Bethesda Game Studios has been picking up fans left and right. I must say, I am one of them.
Witcher 2, The
The Witcher 2 is not only the best game to come out this year, I think it's also one of the best RPGs in recent memory. The combat is difficult, but it teaches you how to grasp it (and in an old-fashioned way, too, not with heavy-handed tutorials). The story is a gripping, mature tale, and you have a chance to make decisions that really matter (not just who you're sleeping with). It's everything I wanted from Dragon Age 2 but didn't get (especially in DA2's the final chapter).
Dark Souls
Probably the most infuriating game on the market. A 'follow' on from Demon Souls, Dark Souls is no way any easier. This a game for a true gamer. Someone who is prepared to die. A lot. But the challenges, the story, the interaction between NPC's and the decisions you make make this game very interesting and rewarding. This is a personal input of mine, due to the fact that so many games provide you with a hand-in-hand guide throughout the game, its about time a game came in and actually challenged you and made you want to go on a killing spree after loosing 45k Demon Souls (Yes...I really did)
Uncharted 3
The characters and objects in the building react realistically as the building tilts, and I’ve never seen this kind of moment done better in any other game. I’d say the main thing the developers need to improve upon in this series is the emotional impact of the story. It’s written pretty well, but I don’t care for Drake and the other characters like I do the ones in Mass Effect. The story aside, Uncharted 2 is not only a technical marvel, but a fantastic game that gets every single aspect of the gameplay down just about perfectly.
Mass Effect 3 I got a really bad first impression of the game, but thankfully I stuck with it. After Noveria, the game really picked up. The freedom of choice in the dialogue sequences was something I had never seen in a video game. Mass Effect’s story became my favorite of all time for video games. Mass Effect 3 really captivated me with its innovation. Its something you kind of have to stick with to really enjoy what the series has to offer.
Zelda, Skyward Sword It should be no surprise that a Zelda game would be here, especially considering that at least three of the games in the series are often candidates for best game of all time.
Also, its Zelda. /Thread
Batman Arkham City If you asked me about 3 years ago whether or not a super hero game could be game of the year, I’d probably give you a weird look. Then I’d explain to you that licensed games are usually just used to make some quick cash. Well, Rocksteady Studios, a pretty unknown developer, came out of nowhere to release Batman: Arkham Asylum to wowed critics. It wasn’t the best game of that year, 2009, but it was almost unarguably the best super hero game ever made. The game gave you an attack button, a stun, and a counter-attack button, and it was great. It didn’t take the challenge out of the game, and it didn’t require players to learn stupidly long combos. With the hookshot, gliding, and being able to swoop around and hide in the shadows, players really got to be Batman. The addition of a challenge mode was fun, especially since they required you to get creative with Batman’s equipment. This new game has Batman fighting Joker and his escaped convicts, Two Face, and Hugo Strange. Catwoman appears as well, and I have a feeling that she might actually be helping Batman. Everything is purely win about Batman.
