Default Some problems with video converting and stuff...

well I know the title tells you so much about my problem... but that`s what threads are for isn`t it^^
    Well here`s my problem...
I bought some anime DVDs and I wanted to try and put them on my I pad 2 so that I can watch them anytime. Let`s just pretend that the problem with hypothetical copy protection is ... solved.
Now I tried to convert the copy of the DVD, which is on my Hard drive into a format, which an Ipad is able to play I looked some things up and it seemed it`s capable of playing MP4 and AVI. The Probram I used is called X Media Recode.
But as these are Anime DVDs I wanted to have the japanese audio with english subtitles. And here begins my problem. Not only does converting to MP4 not work and Itunes doesn`t seem to be able to play the viedo afterwards. When I convert it to AVI it only works without subtitles... SO I do have the Video on japanese and it all works and stuff, but whenever I try to activate subtitles in the preview it only shows half of the subs and when convert nonetheless the program either crashes or the converted Viedo won`t be played by any program I have...
So Iīm seriously confused right now...

Thanks for any help you might be able to offer^^

yeah that's a tricky thing to do..
the thing is on the dvd the subtitles are soft, they are not embedded in the image but (if loaded) are dislayed separately on top of your video.
so to get the subs in your avi you first have to rip the subtitles from the dvd (next to the video itself) and then you have to merge these subtitles with the video so they are embedded.

then we have the case of itunes not recognizing the avi, even within the avi file format there are different types of encoding and itunes will only accept certain types of encoding. so to get the files to itunes you can either hope your ripping software can rip the files again with a different encoding style.
or you will have to convert your avi files to this compatible encoding.

for both of these problems some google-fu will be in order but i'm sure you're capable of that :)

Ah, now It works! it seems the problem was that you could make Xmedia Recode convert the videos especially for Ipad, what I didn`t know, so that I forcibly tried to put a (not working) AVI file into it, which couldnīt work! And the thing with the subs seems to have been just a problem of the preview and not of the converted Video...
