I think I've been studying my health and safety course too much. Yesterday a friend of mine showed me a picture of some lingerie models posing on a staircase the first thought that came into my head wasn't "wow those girls are hwat" it was "OMG those stairs don't have banisters that's dangerous!"

I have my own story to share, I heard it from my mom, who's a professor and sits on Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. She once came across a paper, published by a smart and decorated scientist. It stated that rain forests have a few gigatons of biomass per hectar. Assuming that 'biomass' means every organism above the ground, including plants and animals, dead and alive, a gigaton is overkill. For reference, according to Wikipedia, a gigaton is 10^9 tons, which is 10^15 grams. A hectar is 100 meters by 100 meters. But even if you account for the roots of the trees on that hectar, no way can there be THAT much biomass on a single hectar of forest!

Yeah that does sound like a gross overestimation, even if the the canopy was thinned allowing the forest floor to become choked with shrubs vines and smaller trees.
One thing that I don't get is the excuses people come up with to justify stealing stuff. In the department store cafe where I work my weekend job, we always get people coming up to our newspaper rack and stealing our newspapers despite the fact that there is a big sign saying "please pay for your newspaper at the till" Whenever I stop someone doing it I always get an answer along the lines of, "You're a cafe you shouldn't / you're not allowed to sell newspapers" or "They're supposed to be free" Just because some establishments provide newspapers for customers to brows through doesn't mean that they all do and it certainly doesn't mean you're allowed to just walk in and take a newspaper with you whether they're complimentary or not.
