Soul Eater by KingOfRoll
“Why is this not rated higher??”
The anime follows the story of a group of people known as Technicians who fight with the aid of Weapons - human-looking partners who can turn into more conventional weapons. They are intended to prevent the revival of Kishin, demonic creatures who were men that turned evil, essentially, under direction of the Grim Reaper, and hopefully turn their Weapon partners into Death Scythes (powerful weapons that the Reaper uses) by allowing them to eat the souls of 99 evil humans and one witch.
This one of the stranger animes that I've seen - dark subject matter done in a very light - hearted and non serious way. It is, at many points, completely hilarious.
The animation is pretty sharp and nicely done, and the art style is, in a word, interesting...wait until you see the sun and moon... Character design, for the most part, is well done and suits the tone of the show.
The story is a good one, but it doesn't really start up until around 10 episodes in, though the previous episodes don't suffer for it. Somehow, later in the show, it manages to be both hilariously funny and downright scary and creepy, all in one episode. One thing I noticed, though, is that it seems to get steadily bloodier, though it is never as dark and gory as other shows manage to be.
The characters are good, with a few being among my favorites, but they are nothing special, in general...fairly standard, in other words.
Sound is pretty good, with a great opening track and decent closing tracks. Voice acting is pretty well done in general, but I can't stand the main character's voice. Oh well.
All in all, a great show so far, and I would definately recommend it to anyone looking for a more offbeat action anime.
