Naruto by Mesuraion
“Enjoyable show with good character development!”
It took me quite some time to decide whether I would give the show Naruto a chance or not. Some friends gave really bad comments about the show, like: 'the main character was annoying, the story was dumb and shallow' etc. When I asked them if they had actually séén the show, they mostly replied: "yes, the first 3 episodes." People, please don't make your comments already after seeing 5 or less episodes of a show containing more than 100 episodes. It's a fact Naruto was quite annoying the first episodes. That will change. How more episodes I saw, how more I imagined myself in him, and yes, he stopped saying "Believe it" after the first season.
So where’s the show essentially about? You might already know it’s about ninja’s, but there’s far more in the show of course. The main character is Naruto Uzumaki, a hyperactive kid, who seems to always get into trouble. But there’s something special and sad about Naruto: he got a demon’s spirit sealed inside him, the Kyuubi or the Nine-tailed fox. This demon once tried to destroy the village, the only way to save the village was to seal the Kyuubi away inside a person. Most villagers are scared of Naruto, afraid of the demon inside him. As a result Naruto got ignored and grew up very lonely. At that time, he didn’t even know why the villagers left him alone. Naruto’s dream is to become a Hokage, the respected leader of the village, so that the villagers would finally acknowledge him. But he has a long long road to go, and many dangers to face.
Firstly I want to start with the positive things about Naruto. There's a lot of humor in the show, and some parts definitely made me laugh hard. For example when Naruto, Sasuke and Sakura were trying to find out what's behind Kakashi's mask. Also the main characters all got their own, mostly complicated, background. And after knowing those backgrounds my view about the characters changed. It's quite interesting to discover those backgrounds. People saying Naruto hasn't got a real story, obviously haven't watched the whole show. I really like the way how the characters evolve themselves aswell mentally as physically during the series, learning new battle techniques, growing up etc. Not only the characters, but the whole story itself evolves and becomes stronger, I especially noticed this in the bridge between Naruto and Naruto Shippuuden. One positive point I also value is the fact that (main) characters can die or 'change directions'. This makes the show more mature and more exciting. The parts I love the most are when the Kyuubi takes control over Naruto and goes on a rampage. The different handsigns and poses of each jutsu (=special ninja skills) are very interesting and well-made.
But there are also negative parts about the show of course. Some people say it got overrated, I think that's true, but it also got underrated by a lot of viewers. The thing which annoys me the most is the endless fillers, without any progress of the story at all. It seems like even the fillers got fillers, aah! It's really a drag to get through them, I even stopped watching the pre-shippuuden episodes. The best name for season 8 and 9 would be: filler paradise. But O.K. there's this thing called skipping, easy way to get rid of them. Another point which annoyed me a bit was the time some battles took, like 5 episodes or something. During a battle I expected to see fast action. There was action, but the flashbacks and endless speeches kinda ripped the excitement. I was waiting for the opponent to just suddenly attack Naruto when he was speeching in the middle of a battle, would've been funny right? And sometimes I already figured the sollution of a problem 4 episodes before the characters in the show finally found it, and I didn't even did my best to come to that conclusion. So some outcomes were obvious. I also didn't really got the point of people telling their tricks to their opponents after a battle, weren't they supposed to be hidden so that he/she could also use that trick the next time?
- Sound: 8
I really liked the soundtrack called 'Sadness and Sorrow', it's a great addition of the sadness in the show.
- Story: 7
I didn't count the fillers, but did count the slow progress. But I do find the story about the kyuubi inside Naruto interesting.
- Characters: 8
Every character in the show got his own ninja-style and background.
- Enjoyment: 6
I really did enjoy the chuunin exam in the forest, the battles and the things running between Sasuke and Naruto. But as I already said: the fillers are annoying and the progress of some battles are so terribly slow. Personally, I think they should've shortened Naruto, maybe making the episodes a bit longer and getting back to the basics, without too much flashbacks and speeches.
- Overall rating: 7
I think Naruto is a must-see anime and I do recommend it! Please don't be reserved because of the first episodes, and you'll see Naruto isn't that annoying in the rest of the show. Maybe you'll even start to like him!
One last note: some people say the dubbed version is really fuc-.. err.. bad and naruto got a terrible english voice. I was used to the dubbed version, so I didn't really care. Now, I'm watching the japanese version, and I can see why some people dislike the dubbing. I recommend people to watch the japanese version, but it's your own choice of course!
