“Good - not the best”
Genres: Fighting, Action, Adventure, Comedy, Fantasy
One Piece has really gotten popular. It definately is a good shounen, but it really cannot be seen as the best one ever.
This review will concentrate at several aspects that make a show great. In the End I'll tell you if you can watch it, or not.
SOUND:
The sound of One Piece is very good. There are a lot of very good voice actors in it, who are always able to catch the right emotion for the right moments. I absouletly love some of the openings, especially "We are".
So over all it really sounds nice, I have no major complaints but it's not extremely special.
ANIMATION:
This can be quite weird at times. While battles are often really well animated, a lot of other scenes seem like the animators didn't even bother to do anything. It really is nothing special though, there are shows, which are way better animated, even though they were made in the same time period.
STORY:
Well it's rather basic: Boy wants to be the king of the pirates and forms his own crew and then sets sail. Might sound pretty boring at first, but it HAS some twists and interesting developement. Also it's comedy helps it a lot.
CHARACTERS:
Now this is the aspect One Piece really does well. The main characters are all pretty original and all differ from another. Everybody has their own fighting styles and personalities. We have the relaxed swordfighter who sometimes gets REALLY angry, the cook who has a crush on all beautyfull women, the cheerfull and totally crazy protagonist and the cowardly shooter and lots more. There really is a big variety and all those interactions between the characters are great. The creators really succeeded here.
THE VERDICT:
So in the end, I can't really tell you to "go and watch this show immediately!". It is a really long show which isn't even finished yet. And it also is highly overrated, although it is good.
It's immense lenght could scare people away since it isn't really a deep anime.
So, I'd say you can check it out, but don't expect something mindblowingly awesome. You could compare it too Dragonball, only without all the planet destroying.

The story is really long and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone not willing to devote a month or two of couch loafing to download and watch it all. Not only that but they literally just hit the mid-way point of their circumnavigation of the world, the end of the series being when the finish we generally assume. There are a lot of high and low points, but it really is a good anime. Not the best, but really good.
