Gungrave Review

This anime, even though not one of my favorites was admittedly great. Though this is not a 10 I have to admit that the story kept me craving more. The 1st episode is weird and unnecessary, as it neither engages the viewer, nor gives a good feel of what to expect in the immediate episodes that follow. Beyond that episode, however, you will be rewarded with a rich story that tells of life in a slum, steadfast friendships, chaste love, loyalty and betrayal, the ways of the underground society and corruption of the human heart in the struggle for power. Simply put, this show has one of the most profound story lines I have ever seen out of the 200+ titles I have watched so far.

When it comes down to character design, this has got to be the best element in what Gungrave has to offer. Not only do you see their subtle change in personality as their story progresses, but each protagonist gives plenty of room for the viewer to develop a feeling towards him/her whether it's hate or empathy. The characters are also faced with serious life-making decisions that are both realistic and correlative to the major themes that recur beautifully in the story as well.

Although the art could have been better in terms of quality, it is barely evident. Very little 3D animation and effects were used if any, retaining the "anime" feel to it.

Overall, this is a great series with excellent art, music, plot, character development, and ending. It has tons of drama, action, and even some humor scattered through it. With tons of unique characters who are easily sympathized with, and some of the most unique relationships you'll ever run into, this series is tons of fun and is highly recommended.
