Outline:
The outline of the story makes no sense whatsoever in the beginning. It basically is a boy (girl) trapped inside a video game, The World, who can't remember the real life and can't log off. Tsukasa is meets Mimiru and Bear in the first episode, and Mimiru doesn't like him (her) very much at first. Bear really doesn't have an opinion in the beginning. Eventually, you meet BT as well... and Sora. Now, the Tsukasa is stuck in the game, like I said before, so he (she) actually feels the pain when something happens to him (her). Moving along, a female voice talks to Tsukasa telling him what to do, and he discovers a place where only he can go to, which ends up being his "mind" so to speak. Later on in the story line, you find out about the Key of the Twilight: a legendary item that can do whatever you want. Eventually, the Crimson Knights, the "guardians" of The World, want to find it as well. Subaru and Silver Knight, being minor main characters, impact the storyline a lot. Going back to Tsukasa's "mind", a girl named Aura is in a state of which she is floating and sleeping. The storyline gets much more complex as the story progresses: Tsukasa is a male in The World, but female in real life; Subaru is in a wheelchair; BT falls in love with Crim; ect. ect. That's all I'm gonna say for the whole "Outline".
Evaluation:
The storyline is very complex and comfusing if you don't pay much attention. If you simply watch an anime, but make no effort to see what happens, this anime is NOT for you. You may have to take notes on what happens, and you WILL have to watch this anime twice if you can't comprehend it at all.
Other Info:
As I watch .hack//ROOTS, I notice this: you NEED to pay attention to setting very carefully. The "church" where Tsukasa hides out in a lot returns in ROOTS as well as the girl Aura. Pay close attention to the city as well, for you will see it twice.
