“Sci-fi you have never seen before - it'll keep you on your toes”
When I first glanced my eye at this show, i began to think it was another Gundam-style, end-of-the-world-post-apocalyptic soap opera where the characters are forced to survive together, lost in space on a spaceship. Fortunately for me, i was only right about the lost in space part, because the show turned up to be something completely different.

Vandread is a unique sci-fi anime, set in a universe colonized by mankind, where a special type a war is fought. Neither a conflict of politics, resources or religion, but a xenophobic battle of the sexes, as male and female could not bear each other no longer.

The anime has 13 episodes, of which each tells a story of a different type of emotion, person or event, each effectively making an impact on the crew of the lost ship - its female majority and male ultra-minority, where hatred based on gender slowly fades more and more with each passing episode, slowly generating a strong feeling of compassion and friendship in the air, and eventually embodies itself in the form of love, previously long forgotten.

The anime uses a mixture of CGI and classical character animation, judging by the appearance of the anime's characters, and the effects that appear in the battles that take place throughout the series are often spontaneous, colorful and brilliant, so the action scenes of the anime are guaranteed to keep the viewer excited.

Vandread showed only a few drawbacks throughout the whole series - namely several scenes of fierce aggression and sometimes a sickly theme to spice the story, as well as some plot additions which are too sad to bear.

All in all, Vandread is a brilliant anime and a must-see for sci-fi fans who know that romance is always a welcome addition to any story with beautiful, unspoiled youth for its protagonists.
